I was with some friends at a competiton this weekend which turned out to be run by a pony club (wont mention names). It was a small show jumping comp with some novelty classes as well so they were running late due to massive entries which is good as shows the pony club was well supported etc.

There was lady warming up for the next class while all the kids were eagerly waiting for the results of the class. As she jumped the warm up fence the pony tripped on landing and rolled over the lady onboard and almost into the horse i was warming up for a friend. The horse got up and i caught it for the lady who was in obvious pain.

Not one other person came to help her!

Am I being naive to expect that someone should have offered help to this lady?

I compete BE and whenever I have seen a fall there are always people close by that run to help both horse & rider.

Is this common now in other discipines?

I wouldnt normally comment but the whole incident shocked me! I must add that once the injured lady got outside 2 ladies were holding the pony for the lady.

They must have had a first aider available and the lady should have been told to stay still and someone called, unfortunately first aiders can't be near every accident and it can be a bit cold for them to sit in a practice ring.
Unfortunately most people just walk away or stare ,well done you for helping.
Hope she is ok

There must be a first aider at events for insurance I believe, but this can be someone who happened to take the basic first aid test (which I did as a teenager!) so how much use they'd be anyway I dont know!

Did the offificals see what happened? If not, then they should have been notified and then they would have put over the tannoy for the first aider to attend the warm up. ?

There probably was It wasnt the orgnaisation I was questioning it was the participants and their parents behaviour that shocked me.

I think the lady went and found a first aider as when i went to check if she needed help to get the pany on the lorry/trailer and to chekc she had someone to come and collect them both she had a sling made out of a scarf on so she must have found someone or they found her.

Sorry but I think basic first aid training in moments such as these is about as much use as a chocolate teapot.... Basic does not cover crush injuries especially by half a ton of horse! IMO I think it is totally irresponsible of the PC not to have proper medical cover at events such as jumping.... especially where there are children dashing around on ponies.... (but as I said thats just my opinion!)
it is also disgusting that no one ran to help her..... whilst driving today through a nearby town, just starting to move in a queue of traffic, I saw "someone" drop to the floor as they were walking down the pavement.... immediate reaction, stop car, bang on hazard lights and got out and ran to person.... eventually they were taken off to hospital in an ambulance! its just instinct!!!

Our RC has to have the ambulance cover (St Johns I think) at all events involving jumping - oterwise I believe it invalidates our insurance.
I wonder, could this lady sue the PC concerned if she ended up with ongoing complications from not being given correct first aid? In the current 'no win no fee' climate it wouldn't surprise me if someone did one day!
