Hi there,

My 9 year old daughter absolutely loves watching the Concours classes at shows and its her dream to have an outfit of her own and do it on her little pony....so for her bday I've bought her an outfit off Ebay as a surprise. Its not really my thing at all, but I think she's going to love it :) and its something different to experience.

Does anyone know what you're expected to do in the class (only local level btw)....do you have to give an individual show or are you just expected to walk/trot round together?? Also, does anyone know how they judge the classes, there's very little information available on the internet searches I've done.

Thank you xxx

I have seen quite a few classes and all have had a very similar format

Enter individually at trot and trot around back to the entrance where a steward halts you until you are all in and queued up. Sitting trot definitely for those in dresses, those in classic dress will do either sitting or rising trot

once the last has trotted in the queue is released and walk round for a period of time that varys from half a circuit of the ring to several circuits

The entrants are called in and line up in the order they were in when walking round

The judge then walks the line and examines the outfits, asks questions etc, I have seen the odd show where each is called out in turn for a walk and trot up (always mounted)

Then the final placings are decided and the line either sent back out to walk the ring again to be called back in to line in order of placings

Or

They are called forward from the original line in to their placings

I dont think there are any hard and fast guidelines on judging, some judges have a preference for classic dress and others for the fancy dresses, either way its usually a classy looking turnout that wins, those with lots of bling/fluorescent netting etc are not usually up at the top of the line, believe it or not it IS possible to overdo it!

In the 2 I have done we have walked round, called in and done a full individual show - walk, trot, canter, change of rein and exstension.

wow I have never seen anything as exciting as that, in many cases I doubt many of the 'hats' I have seen would survive more than a brisk trot lol

Thanks for the replies, the outfit we've gone for is more understated and traditional, in darker colours. I'm not a big fan of the brightly coloured fancy dress style outfits to be honest. I'm hoping she won't be asked to do an individual show with canter as I'm not quite sure how the pony will react with a big skirt flapping about :) All good fun though lol x
