Hi there. I had stables built last year and am finding that the stable floors are very dusty, almost to the point of flaking away. In one stable, straw is used (others on shavings) and in the wee areas there is a definite indent in the concrete where it is coming away.

I know I have to seal them, but what with? Should I get it skimmed first?

Help please!!

tbh i'd go back to the person who put the concrete down for you and ask them to come and inspect it. if they knew it was for stable flooring, they should have used the right type of concrete (impervious to horse urine).
i've used sealant on concrete but only to stop it from being so dusty, it sounds as if you need something more impervious tbh.

Yep,my stepfather built the block for me and I am fairly sure they didn't use urine repellant concrete.....

He's really busy right now,so I was hoping to do something on top of it rather than dig whole lot out and do something else.

I don't want to go into details on here, but it is not the right time to complain to him about the building works he did for me.....

Is it possible that having the pour on rubber flooring would help? It would completely seal the floor from the wee any way and give you a nice base for the horses?

Not sure how dear the alternative options would be in comparison with this.

Im afraid to say matting is really the only way to go...we've tried quite literally every single concrete sealant, just doesnt work well enough.

We try to think of it that matting will be cost effective in the end...less bedding?!

We painted on some stuff that garages put down on concrete in the workshops( think mechanics not the garage you have at home) we got it from a friend who was in the trade but you could try and approach an independant garage. It cost about £45 for two boxes but dried in a day , was a bit like painting with treacle but the surface is fine 3 yrs on

what about a thin urine repellent/sealant screed (just a thin layer on top).......would that work?

I don't think a thin layer of a screed concrete would be a wise option, without covering it with matting anyway.

That thin layer is likely to chip off if a horse stamps on it, paws the ground etc. Won't be heavy duty enough....well...I wouldn't have thought so.
