I emailed a manufacturer of yard brooms to ask why the broom head constantly unscrewed itself from the handle. I wondered if it was because I am left handed.
The reply from the equine sales manager

"The first thing I would do is ask someone a little stronger to have a go at tightening the broom."

Really?? I'm surprised she didn't suggest I find a strong man....

I was (and still am) gobsmacked

Are these brooms named after a certain primate? I had one for years and it was brilliant but the handle eventually rusted through. It wasn't much more expensive to buy a new one than just a handle so we had a whole new broom. It's nowhere near as good. It keeps unscrewing itself and it's so frustrating. I'm tempted to stick a screw through the whole screw mechanism so it can't move but I think any hole I put in it will just stretch. I've wrapped gaffer tape around it now and it seems to be doing the trick.

But yes, that is a bit patronising.

A very kind person bought a whole load of these for my RDA. They are the most frustrating brooms to use because of the constant unscrewing. And also because they are so heavy. Someone at the yard put a screw through a couple and the handles snapped. I wouldn't ever buy them myself. My cheap & cheerful B&Q broom is brilliant and it's never unscrewed itself.

Ah, gorilla brooms, I know them well. I'd have been fuming at that response from the sales manager.

Yes, the handles tend to unscrew all the time. It is an infuriating design weakness.

Araldite, preferably applied when the broom is new, is your friend.

The darn things are very good at sweeping, which is why I persevered.

What a bloody cheek! I’d probably reply suggesting she rereads her words and realises how rude and patronising they are.
And from the comments on here you are vindicated ?

Slight tangent but I watched an old episode of QI last night. The rules of netball came about (in particular not being able to move from your section of the court and not being able to run with the ball) because the person who adapted the rules of basketball to make them 'suitable' for women thought they would pass out if they ran too much or their hearts wouldn't cope. Ok it was 100+ years ago but I was livid!

its nothing to do with strength its to do with the poor quality product ..

what a lazy response.

gorilla brushes have gone rapidly downhill, none of mine last (and don't worry, i'm not overexerting myself and brushing them into the ground ) ;)

Now ,now - don't be getting yourself all upset sweetie . Go and have a lie down on the chaise longue with a nice cup of tea before you have an attack of the vapours .
At times like this I find thinking about kittens helps .

You forgot the smelling salts.

It reminds me of the time I limped a lorry home with 7 horses on board when the accelerator pedal was sticking. The boss and the mechanic were waiting in the yard when I got back, whispering to each other, and the mechanic's first words to me were "are you sure it's not the clutch pedal?"

I had a Gorilla broom. I thought I would like it but, TBH, I preferred the wooden one it replaced. Then, when it was older, I hadn't realised the handle was rusted, until the day it was being used, it bent in half, and I cut my hand quite badly on the sharp edge.

I immediately wondered if it was a Gorilla Broom as I have one and a few people on the yard have them and they all do exactly the same.
