I've had the new boy just coming up 3 months now, he was very very lean when I got him, but I'm still struggling to get weight, condition and top line on him (without blowing his brains with too much hard feed!). What do others think of his condition please.
He's just turned 6, 17hh, irish sports. we've not really been doing any decent work to build up his top line, just letting him settle in and enjoy being a horsie.
Thanks

Dont go putting too much weight on him, he looks nearly perfect..a little more weight on the quarters and those ribs havnt completly vanshed yet. You cn build muscle tone up your self to finish it off, dont rely to much on hard feed, hes looking well at mo just a fraction or weight left to go!!

I think he looks just right weight wise though he needs more muscle as you know. I wouldn't worry about getting more weight on him just start building up the muscle.

I got Baron (horse in siggy) when he was 6. He is 16.3 IDxTB. He was underweight and lacking muscle when I got him. He has only just filled out now and it has taken 2 years. Aparenly this breed of horse tends to take longer to fill out, once they reach about 8 they fill out quite a bit.

So dont expect too much too soon

But I think he looks well. I fed my horse by the bucket load and did loads of work to build him up and tbh it didnt really make that much difference, only when he matured a bit did I notice a change.

Lovely horse btw

he looks well and coat looks good too, just some grass and quality work to cover him a little more especially across his back end and hips and he will look fab but all comes with time and as you have said you are giving him time. seems like you are doing everything right well done and great that you arent rushing him.

Thanks for your comments, seems I'm heading along the right lines then.
I will have to convert his stable into a mini gym for him to start doing some weight lifting and build up his muscles!!!
