I spoke to a feed adviser Dengie today and she told me that a horse should have a body condition score of bottom end of 3/upper end of 2 (on a scale of 0-5)................... This is (apparently) the condition top event horses are in and is what I should be striving towards with my 14.2 coloured native mare..................
Personally, I think she would be a bit too light at this condition.
opinions?

Regardless of the type/breed, this is the condition score every owner should aim for. This is a body condition not a weight, and will be correct.

Personally, I think they are right and that is the healthiest condition, however it is not necessarily what we find most aesthetic and probably wouldn't be the ideal condition in most show judges eyes!

Hhhm see I'm always a bit cautios with the condition scoring on my mare. Because her ribs would be classed as good-fat... but her rump would only be classed as moderate-good. And her neck would also be classed as moderate-good.

But there we go.

hmmm - there's my difficulty - when she loses weight, it goes from her neck and then her rump. (wish it woul on me....) If I were to let her doewn to 2.5 - 3, she'd look like a cut and shunt pony. No back end, despite being fit.
