Conditioning feeds

I think my mare might have a barley intolerance. Am waiting on some bloods results which will hopefully comfirm this but I need to get some weight on her.
Anybody recommend a good conditioning feed?

I tried to A&P Calm and Condition - she wont eat this as its fed like a mush.

Hi,
I really like D&H Build-up cubes and they have done wonders for my Irish TB. I used them with some speedi-beet when it was really cold and has kept him in good condition. They don't turn mushy either

QR: Ride & relax is completly Barley free; and is good for horses with allergies. My horse is a chunky monkey

Thats what ive just taken her off as I think this is what is causing her skin problem

Saying that though it is a great feed. Its put her weight on and kept it constant. She looked really well on it till now.

been looking at A&P feeds. Dont they all have to be soaked before feeding? or have I got that wrong?

My lad didn 't get on with Calm & Condition so I changed him onto Ride & Relax & he has some Blue Chip in it aswell with some Hifi Lite & carrots, keeps his weight & condition, doesn't fizz up & eats every bit.
I water his feeds & give them a stir but I don't soak them to mush.

she ate the C&C at first but then got to the point where she refused point blank to eat it. Never thought of blue chip - god knows why as i used to feed it years ago.

urm well i would have recommended Calm and Condition but if she wont eat it thats no good!!

what about a cup of linseed oil in every feed?? that will put weight on

or if you're really struggling i know an old pony who is a nightmare to keep any weight on at all which looks fantastic on milk pellets

Hattie - shes a pain in the arse when it comes to feed. I gave her 3 haynets the other night to make sure she had enough to eatbut she hardly touch the majority of it. she already has oil in her feeds but moving on from what you said, what about linseed pellets? do you soak the linseed? just that someone at the yard feeds it but I dont seem what she does with it. Will have to start googling it. Cheers Hattie.

If you can get BlueGrass feeds try their cool and condition nuts - really good for putting on condition.

hmm well traditional linseed you have to boil until it turns to a jelly but i dont know if its the same for linseed pellets!! it a bit of a performance i think if you have to boil it etc. but if you can just feed it normally then it may be good?

id would also have thought blue chip would work too

dont think I could be arsed to boil linseed for her - she probably wouldnt want to eat it after all my effort went into it. The pellets they have are little and brown things - never seen them before and havent seen what they do with them - may have to ask tonight if I see them.

Yes blue chip is definitley a thought - may see if they can send me some samples to try her on before buying a bag and wasting it if she has a reaction

Otherwise try linseed powder, works really well too, and my horse doesnt like the oil but has done as well with the powder. Theres also baileys outshine, which keeps the condition and weight on this horse i know that is really not a good doer.

the Calm and Condition you should as it contains sugar beet. Think you should put it to something like 1 part feed to 2 parts water. I fed it dry for a while then read the feeding instructions

Try phoning BlueGrass they are very helpful about getting you feed - there were no stockists near me either and they now deliver directly to me

And all their feed`s are very good and cheaper than other brands (well over here at least).

My horse gets "barley bumps" and is a skinny thing, the condition cubes never seemed to work and I dont like the A+P feeds. Had him on the soaked oats for about 6 months, weight is up, no bumps and now hes on bog standard nuts and alfalfa.
Have been reading your bump posts for a while, how is she now? What are you feeding her at the mo?

She had her last meal of build up cubes on Friday 4.30am. Saturday mornign I checked the lumps out and they had decreased. The area was all swollen from Wednesday monring all of which had gone by Saturday morning. The lumps are now quite dry and the scabs are coming off quite easily. Shes nto as narky and doesnt want to bite your head off when you touch her. Shes certainly not as bothered about them and shes certainly not stamping as much. Shes getting a handful of Happy hoof and speedibeet so she can have her supplement (equivite), carrots, then haylage and thats it. Shes getting as much haylage as she can eat.

I have my doubts about the soaked oats thing but wouldnt mind giving it a go in case it does work for her. Just dont understand how it works as horses dont digest oats?? if you help then more than happy to hear - might PM Tia abou this and the black sunflower seeds too

Does the allen and page feed have to be soaked???

Couldnt see anything about soaking it on their web site..... infact it says "for people who would rather feed pelleted feeds than mixes"

no it doesnt does it but on the bag of the bags it does say to soak the feed. I know the Calm and Condition has sugar beet pulp in it so thats why I thought it had to be soaked but have since found out some of their other feeds have to be soaked too.

Baileys no 4 top line conditioning cubes are wheat based, none heating and slow release energy used in a lot of top show yards where condition is everything! Might be worth a try.
