confidence boosting?

i will jump anything at home/training

but it all goes to pot out competing...
im ok at the smaller heights, but as soon as i get to a height i jump all the time at home i freeze, and then freak out at the fillers, which she senses and then stops :s

help please

im bombarding with questions today

yes i jump them at home, and shell refuse them the first time and then jump them...
but at shows shell stop and stop and stop until i normally get eliminated...

i think i get nervous because she has stopped before and it wasnt my fault i dont think.... and i know she can jump anything i put up.
 
You sound a little bit like me DS - I have huge problems when I go to shows

Has anyone watched you jumping at shows and explained to you what they see? I know now that I 'hold' too much in front of the fence due to my nerves, so we grind to a halt

But it was so unconcious that until someone told me I did it I had no idea - just wondered whether it might be something like that for you?
 
i train with richard barton... well i should do everymonth.. but i havent since may :L

mum watches, but i dont like her telling me what to do
and the only other person i can think of, i dont really like her giving me cc, as she goes ott....
 
keep jumping fillers at home and wherever you can in practise until she doesn't stop at all at them an at shows stay at a height you are confident at. don't put too much pressure on yourself just go out and enjoy what you're doing. its really hard but you just have to try and forget the previous stops, my horse stopped alot for about 2 years i was eliminated more times than i can remember but then i sort of gave up on him and i now don't care what he does and for some reason my nerves have gone and he's jumping really well this year. I got a really funny self hypnosis cd i think its called a mind to ride which i think might have helped a bit but it was very funny to start with. also i think it really helps if you can ride different horses, i actually bought a really genuine one to get my confidence back but if you can ride a friends or have some lessons on a different one it'll really help

i did that too i checked and checked until there was nothing there so the horse had to stop but it was just because i felt safer having extra strides in case he stopped ie less speed=less chance of falling off, very annoying and difficult to shift habit though

I have been told I must do canter poles every day that I ride, adding a little X-pole in towards the end, and think FORWARD, GIVE WITH MY HANDS every time

Oh wow, do I know that feeling, if this helps ... jump bigger at home than out. Go to as many different places to jump (honestly, people are normally really happy to lend you their schools/fields/scary jumps if you explain why) and also get someone to video you jumping at home which may give you clues and will add a frisson to the session!.

Good idea to go and have a lesson on a different horse - I will try that one!!

And remember its all about having fun. Having you tried going to a little show, jumping the clear round and then deciding whether or not you want to go higher and gradually working up the heights? At least you horse will have had a good look at all the jumps so you are in with a better chance - and if you don't feel like it go home and cherish the (hopefully) clear round rosette!!
 
Something fun we did with my sisters horse before we took him competing is to rent out a local arena, we rented a local one which have HUGE amounts of scary fillers water trays etc. Really helps as you can then do them in your own time.
 
we dont have many clear rounds, but i normally do like a 2ft class, as a warm up, and then a 2'3 for proper... but that class goes wrong, as the fillers move from the wings to under the poles :L:L
 
Like Brighthair said, try going to as many of your friends' yards as you can. That way you are facing new and "scary" jumps more often and not only at shows making it more relaxed and less worrying when faced with something new at a show.

Also jumping on front of your friends might help you in another way as well, it may well be that you get nervous of other people watching you and you worry about negative criticism

So jumping in front of others when you aren't in a show environment could help you see that people won't criticise you all the time and if they do it is only to help. (this bit is based on me, my main worries that let me down were that I would forget the course, or that people were laughing at me)
 
oh yes ill just travel 7 hours to your yard :L

im not bothered about jumping in front of people, as ive got used to comments and stuff; i used to swim for east anglia, so i am really focused and block everyone out at a competition... which is why i seem moody :P

i think i fixed my checking by alot of grid work and a very shouty trainer who knew what i was going to do before i did it

still chip in the odd little stride when i'm having a bad day though
