Today for the first time we took the two boys out in the field together(my boy been on very light, retirement, work with his hocks and wife's new boy 9yo).
We've been in the school together and all is fine, my boy is only supposed to walk, maybe trot.:o
In the field as we started to walk I said to wife to trot on ahead and see how things go:eek: I was sat on my old boy as he jogged and then reared(small) trying to get a flying start to catch up, cantering off in a hurry, this from a horse who can't walk from the field because his legs are so bad.
My point is that I was not expecting it, I sat it all, but now she (wife) wants to do it again but I don't trust my seat.:o

You'll be fine next time! Don't forget this was the first time out and your horse was running on adrenaline! Could you wife next time perhaps trot to catch you up instead, or perhaps there is a route that you could do where you could do a shorter distance in walk and your wife could do another path where she could trot? In any event - I'm sure that next time, and especially if you go out together again very soon, all will be fine and less exciting for everyone!

They are funny things my friend wasnt supposed to do anymore than walk her old boy due to a fracture in the pelvis years before(a real wonky horse) but when she moved him to another village he would gallop non stop ! He was PTS age 37 years!

You may find just excitement of it all who can blame him! Just sit and enjoy!

Good luck, press on and be determined, I am sure you will both soon settle into the new outings and begin to enjoy them :-) - you are not alone in these confidence issues be assured !!

rather than seperating them, have your wife trot large circles around you, or away a short distance and then come back. If he knows the other pony is not going far, not leaving him behind, he should soon settle, and then your wife over a period of time, may be able to be more advntorous or disapear longer.

alternatively have you a third rider that could stay with you and your boy, until he gets a bit more able to keep up.
