confidence giving plod???

Hi guys

I have been looking for 3 years for a confidence giving plod for my partner. At present we have a 16.2 plod which is great but we want to be able to ride out together, our current horse is so laid back he is horrisontal, and a bomb could go off next to him and he wouldnt flinch. We have been to look at a few horses sold suitable for novice and as a plod but when you get there they are not suitable. We went to veiw one horse and when my partner got on the horse galloped off and my parnter ended up braking his arm in 13 places and now has to be so careful as he is having an op this week to remove part of his wrist. Are we just really gifted with our present horse or are we looking for the impossible? My partner is 16 stone and 6ft 2 if anyone knows of anything of permanent loan or for sale in the north east please please cna someone help?
 
I'm sure there is something out there for you but I can sympathise with what you're going through. I've got a perfect bombproof schoolmaster who is now 24 and semi retired. I have been so spoilt with having such a good horse it's been impossible to get something anywhere near as good! Three months ago I did get a new horse who's only 5. I feel really safe on him and he's great in the traffic but because he's so young he's lacking in other areas such as schooling and stable manners. After a lot of work I'm sure we'll get there.
Good luck in your search, there's got to be the horse for you out there somewhere. One of the problems is that confidence giving plods are now in high demand as many peoples partners are taking up riding and this is what they want to ride.
Don't give up the search.

I totally lost my confidence with a nutcase TB, & bought a very safe ID mare. She really was very safe indeed, & in the end did her job a bit too well as I got my confidence back & wanted to move up a gear again!! Sold her to a fab home which also wanted a plod.

They ARE out there, I promise!!

My current horse is a 5 yo ISH & he's very safe too. The dealer I got him from found horses for three sisters who were deaf/mute which needed to be totally safe, but he is south of me which will be way too far south for you.

My o/h also tried a 'safe' horse once, & it galloped round & round the arena like a wall of death & dumped him into the fence & some stinging nettles. It was awful to watch.
 
They are definitely out there, I have one but I managed to damage her so I can't sell her! My friend also has one, he is a Haflinger so can be a bit strong but my mum is like a jelly when she rides and he takes good care of her. The sane types just seem to be much more rare (and expensive) than the rest of them

i got 1 too. i managed to buy the horse i was riding at my riding school, you could always ring up riding schools and ask if they have anything they would consider selling, as i found out if you dont ask you dont get!

so they are definitely out there, but both of mine are worth their considerable weight in gold, so have a home for life. One was given to me 8 years ago and the other (the big black mare in my avatar) I bought from a riding school two years ago, she is now 9. I would definitely consider a reputable riding school - they change their school horses every 2 years or so and my mare had always been hacked alone as well as in company. Neither of mine will ever set the world on fire, but they are as safe as the proverbial house. Good luck and keep looking
 
I have one too but he's probably bit small for your other half at 14hh. I did see a suitable weight carrying horse (well thats how it was described) I think was on adhorse. Try Safecobs as well. Good luck hope OH gets better soon xx
 
We were looking for the same kind of horse for my partner who is a about 6ft 1 and weights about 17 stone and it took six months of really intensive searching (I checked every website, magazine and paper there is every day!). Overall I must have called up about hundreds of horses which sounded OK in the advert but turned out to have major 'ifs' and 'buts'. We went to see 16 horses. I laways asked the owner to pop on first - some refused and this was supposed to be a bombproof hack suitable for a complete novice! If they passed that test, then I got on just to make sure - out of 16 I only allowed my OH to try 2! The others were too nuts to even bother with! Of the two he tried one napped and when I got on to see how bad it was it gave some all mighty bucks and the other one we bought! He's a HW IDx, only 16hh but a very substantial chap, and we've had him for 6 years now. I do have to say that they are very difficult to find at that size with the right temperament and experience, but keep looking!
