Had a first lesson with a brilliant new RI the other day. He got on my horse and honestly Stan looked amazing, just floating round the school, and all the issues I have battled with for what seems like months, he seemed to resolve in about 5 minutes! I got back on and horse seemed so much more responsive but also a bit kind of hyper like he was gonna charge off at any second and he was really sensitive to all going on around us which he isn't normally. Since then I have been kind of anxious when I ride him - not sure whether its cos he is more sensitive or whether it's because I feel I will never be able to get him going like my RI did. Anyone ever felt like this?

PS - Anyone think its poss that the new spring grass starting to pop up is adding to his sensitive state? He is usually such a sensible boy and other than RI I have changed nothing!

I would look at it another way, if a trainer could not ride my horse better than me then I would be reconsidering using them :)

Yes, the spring grass could have an effect, but it is more likely that your horse just isn't used to being ridden in a different way /by a different person. Please persevere. If you have found his "on" button (and providing you are happy with the way the trainer was riding him) then you will need to get used to how he now feels. He will settle down in time.

When is your next lesson? can you talk about your concerns with your new RI?

I do understand, as pretty much anyone can make my mare go better than I can *sigh* but in a way it's nice to see what she's capable of and what I need to aim for. I also had that feeling of 'eeeeeep - she's going a bit too forwards' and it would be then that my instructor would say 'that's it she's finally starting to move properly'. I did get used to the extra ooomph as my lessons progressed. :)

Good luck and talk to your instructor. :D

Awwwww don't feel low. I used to loan a horse and when his owner got on he would work beautifully. VVvvv annoying but was lovely to see what my horse was capable of.

i think you've prob taken a confidence knock and its probably now affecting you.

Thanks Herts05 - funnily enough when I got back on ,I said something like "oh, he feels a bit wired now". RI said "that's good - use it to your advantage" I think thats the part I am struggling with!

I was more than happy with how he rode him - in my dreams I can ride like that!:)

Now you know your RI is a good rider- excellent, this is a good start. Now, if your RI is a good instructor, they should be able to teach you to ride him that way too.

Well you can ride like your RI,takes time and effort, just like what he's had to do to get there, depends how badly you want it, so don't beat yourself up, just get determind.:):):):)

Thanks Lucie and Faracat - got a lesson same time next week - will defo mention how I am feeling. I have never been the most confident of riders but have been in a bit of a dip since last sept when I took a bit of a fall(not hurt thankfully but a bit shaken). But, I want my boy to be the best he can be.. he is so beautiful! Guess I have to find it in me to man up!

so you have seen how he can go! you instructor now knows how he can go and what is req to get this, so i think you are now on a win win situation! your instructor can guide you through this and teach you to ride the more forward horse and achieve your aims..... kick onand go!!

Aw don't feel down!
I had the same thing when I first took my pony to our instructor, and he went amazingly.
Two years on and I can almost get the same results from him, it's great to know what the pony is capable of and have something to work for.

Please don't let it knock your confidence - they are RI's for a reason and have had lots and lots of practice on a load of different horses.

I am the opposite in fact - I can't afford lessons on my horse yet, but I really hope she goes A LOT better for someone who is a trainer/RI, or I am losing the will to even try and get her going nicely. I thought we had turned a corner the last few weeks but today she was a pig. She was resistant, obstinate, and quite frankly impossible to work correctly. I nearly cried with frustration and ended up getting off and putting her back out in the field. The temp was a lot warmer today (22 degrees) and she was sweaty but it's hardly like I flogged her so can't see that would make much difference - I'm sure she uses it as an excuse sometimes!

So so relate to what your experiencing I feel exactly the same, RI has bought my boy on so much yet I can barely ride one side of him, he is also more responsive which takes some getting used to. I get low about it but ultimately I will get there with him, and so will you..

Don't you give up either moomin! horses can be maddening at times but tomorrow is another day. I am sure a good instructor will be able to help so worth saving up for! Its just such a strange feeling when you see someone else getting your horse going as you dreamed of!

Thank you - so glad others can relate - it's such a funny feeling! I hadn't really taken on board the difference in responsiveness a good rider can make!

Thankyou - I definately need an instructor to come along as much as I can afford to get me ship shape. I know I have some terrible habits which are making matters ten times worse! Think I am just having a bad day, and I'm sure things will perk up again soon!!

Mmmm, I get all wistful when my RI rides my pony - he's very positive and the pony that could spook and nap to Olympic standard positively dances for him and simpers at him afterwards! Oh, and decked me AGAIN tonight with a spook right at the end of a good lesson - but I'll get there...

Always sickening when instructors get on and have your horse going really well within minutes although thats why they're RIs :) Sounds like your instructor got him moving on more than you would to get him in front of the leg. That's all good and I'm sure when you tell him how you feel he will adapt lessons accordingly.

Look forward to hearing your next report :)

I had this when previous owner came to see how my boy was doing a few weeks after I brought him home, her daughter came with her and asked to have a go and she got him going round the school absolutely lovely.

I felt down for a little while and couldn't see how I could get him going as nice. Now, however, I can get him going round just as nice, if not nicer, than she did. It just gave me an extra boost to crack on and improve my own skills.
