Well as many of you know i had a nervous breakdown of sorts just after loosing my big lad - sorry to most people i caused offence too -hubby took me away for a week and just before we went he told me a new pony was coming to keep little lad company.

She arrived 28th September - she was jabbed, quaranteened and blood and swobbed - everything came back clear so she then was turned out with my other horse 2 weeks later. That very night she came in with a huge lump under her throat - now she has 3 wolf teeth to come out so we were wondering if that had kicked off as we had been working her - and as the swobs and bloods were clear for strangles we did not do a major panic - just got vet out and they said it was Strep Zoo - (more of a cold than the black plauge) - vet came out on Tuesday week- lanced the swelling took pus sample - and bloods - insisted on doing another nasal swob - I asked why and they said to prove its not strangles - I said well clearly it is ???? anyway - swob came back negative, bloods came back high, and pus came back positive.

Little lad was made to be on quaranteen as well - so after having horses on box rest since June I now had another lot to go through - but worse its with the change of clothes, dip your feet lot.

I really feel like i have shot a robin this year and i just want to give it all up - i am still so numb since loosing the big lad and now the vets want to do guttarl washes which means sedation - sedation killed my big lad - but if i dont and she is a carrier i then risk my other horse.

I feel like i am truley going mad

It does seem sometimes that life just doesn't let you get back on your feet.

With the new horse you can be proud that she is getting the best care - she might have gone to someone else who didn't call the vet for her. And you couldn't leave your little lad alone - so you were only thinking of him when you got her.

Sometimes you just have to put one foot in front of the other and get through.

But please if you haven't gone to the doctor already make an appointment. I resisted getting help for my low mood for years and it has made such a huge difference to how I cope with what life throws at me.

Sorry to read this. You haven't had much luck this year :(

Hope it all comes good for you and ponies and 2013 is your lucky number.

Hi, sorry everything has been so rough for you. I don't know your history and am on my phone so it makes it difficult to look back.
How old are your two now? My mare caught strangles last year and although it was anything from pleasant she recovered and is now fine. You had the thought enough to get your new addition tested, although unfortunately it did not pick up the bacteria (swabs are not reliable which is why post symptoms vets do 3 to get a better chance of being right and although bloods are more accurate can still give inaccurate results). Strangles affects the young and elderly the worst generally and some seem to suffer worse than others. Keep yourself surrounded by support and help as its not your fault this has happened and keep to hand anything you used before when you whernt feeling great and if those things don't help seek further help and advice.

Sorry to hear this & hope everything is sorted soon. Keep us updated & as someone else said lets hope you have a better year next year :)

Some years are like that but fortunately they do pass.
You expend a great deal of energy giving your horses the best care possible, you also need to make sure you that you look after yourself. If you haven't already, make an appointment to see your GP and tell him/her about your dreadful time.
We had strangles locally last year, one person had 3 youngsters, who got it to varying degrees but all have made a full recovery and are fine now. In fact all local horses are fully recovered.
Try not to worry too much (easy to say I know) and trust the vets to do their stuff.

If it helps, I admire you for just getting on and giving the horse great care and a good chance. How many times do you hear people on here whinging on and throwing blame around when they get a horse and then decide its not quite right, so Gingerwitch, please give yourself a huge pat on the back for really caring for your animals, its an admirable trait.

My heart really does go out to you you sound like your year has been like mine, it can get as though you feel like you are wading waist high through something horrible.

I can even understand the offending people bit as I have been vile to everyone and do not even want to see people since losing my 4 yo after a horrible time and a boob by the vet.

We have lost two horses and our beloved dog this year so are going to be so glad to see the back of it, you just have to look forward to next year. I can understand why you are worried but you are just going to have to be strong and push on with what needs done.

I was fed up yesterday and got a call form neighbour saying one of my horses was on the road and flew out there imagining him being hit by a car when I got there, he was standing munching with the neighbour guarding him, the man said he will not let me touch him as soon as he saw me he came rushing over and was stuck to me like glue, he then sniffed the neighbour as he was safe mum was there, the bugger had jumped fence in rough at back of garden then undid bolt to gate it is now padlocked, but that made me laugh and cheered me up his face and wanting me to rescue him. That is what helps you carry on.

If you ever need to vent rant or even offend please feel free to pm me I totally understand and sending kindest thoughts and wishes to you and your horses. Crossing everything for a super speedy recovery.

GW I really feel for you. Since March my old boy has had choke, colic and then been diagnosed arthritic. I feel like screaming and shouting because its so unfair but what can we do but continue to do the best by our horses!

I keep hoping that I'll find the silver lining soon, I hope you find yours too. Big hugs + lots of positive vibes for you xxxx
