The saddle in question is an Ideal working hunter saddle in havana, bought nearly new as a medium-wide and 17". It was my christmas present (my only one as I've been longing after a leather saddle for so long) and its purpose was to be my showing saddle, used once a month for shows and lessons. When I first tried it on I could tell it didn't fit...

Firstly called Martin Wilkinsons and they sent their saddle fitter out to me, she checked my other saddle (which was narrow-medium) and took it to be made wider as my pony had changed shapes into a medium (later saddle was said to be broken). She looked at the Ideal saddle and instantly said it was too wide and said there was nothing she could do for it except change the tree costing me hundreds (Fylde have said they'll do it for 20 quid

). I didn't find her very friendly and she didn't even watch me sit on either saddles or ride. She also told me that it was 16.5" I bought a cliff barnsby GP off her to replace the broken the saddle in bog standard medium size, he's very happy with that and so am I.

A couple of months on, I then booked the courier to take my Ideal WH saddle to fylde saddlery to have the tree made narrower but the courier never turned up! Incidentally a saddler from Bridlepath was coming to the yard to flock my cliff barnsby and asked to have a look at it. She measured the saddle and said it was just under 17.5" and was actually a medium width. She said that the tree didn't need adjusting and just needed flocking, so I let her flock it, she watched me ride and said when he builds up more topline it will fit him great.

Anyway on friday I rode in the saddle, my boy was terrible, spooked at everything and threw in some bucks, totally unlike him so I got off thinking it was spring grass. Tried again saturday in the indoor school so no excuse for spooking, he was a nightmare again, got off and he looked very unhappy, tried his normal saddle on and he was fine! It sits fairly low on his withers when I'm riding, only one fingers width, saddler 2 assured me this was fine and would change when he got more topline.

Thing is it's not like he doesn't have much topline now, he is ridden 5 days a week in an outline and is built like a show hunter pony, I don't really want a saddle that fits him for two months out of the whole year! I'm getting confused with conflicting advice and running out of money. To make it worse my first showing show is next monday and I've already sent my entries off. I now have two options:

1) I've been recommended Anthony the saddle fitter from Batchelor of Epping, although I know they've now moved to Ongar and I'm having loads of trouble getting a contact number for him. I could get him down for a third (!) opinion.

2) send the saddle to Fylde to be made narrower (I'd send a template of his withers aswell)

I'm not going to the show if the saddle doesn't fit but I feel so so let down and disappointed by different advice

Can you not sell the saddle and get a saddler out with a range of show saddles and buy one of those?

I know that could be difficult before next weekend, can you not ride in the other saddle?

I would try and find a decent saddler in your area, ideally by word of mouth, and stick to one person.

I dont think sending the saddle away with a self made template is the answer personally, as there is more to assess than just the width.

Get someone out who has a good a reputation to keep, they should definitely watch you ride in the saddle.

What area are you? Someone on here may be able to recommend someone?

I tried to sell the saddle from January-April untill I found out Fylde could change the sizing. It just wasn't selling! Advertised it everywhere I could find and it's in nearly new condition, was lucky I put a minimum purchase price on ebay as it only went upto £210! Both saddlers said it's easily worth £500, Martin Wilkinson wouldn't take it because it doesn't have modified panels (which apparently is all they sell) and most other saddlers will only take it on if I buy a new saddle which I can't afford to do.

I can't ride in the other saddle as it's forward cut and black, for affiliated showing it has to be brown and straight cut, so thats a dead end aswell!

I'm in on the East herts/London/Essex borders, have been recommened the Batchelor of Epping by a few people but they've moved to Ongar now! Have heard mixed reviews about Ingatestone, won't touch Martin Wilkinson with a barge pole now and starting to run out of saddlers!

Can I just ask why you "won't touch Martin Wilkinson with a barge pole" You might not have liked the woman who came out but it would appear that her advice was correct. The saddler who reflocked it sounds as if they didn't give a good service. I like Fylde saddlery but am not sure that it as easy to shange the shape of an Ideal tree as all that, though Peter did help in the desigh of the saddles. You say the saddle you bought frm them fits your horse and he goes well in it. Where is the problem.

I won't touch them because they told me my saddle was 16.5 when it wasn't, that's quite a big mistake to make to be honest as she then told me I was too tall for the saddle, when I'm not. She was frankly quite rude to me about my horse, and didn't watch me ride or even sit on either saddles. It wasn't actually her that sold me my GP saddle it was the lady that actually makes the saddles that sold me it (she was lovely and very helpful.) The problem is that my GP saddle cannot be used as my show saddle, therefore requiring me to get my show saddle sorted out.

Sounds like you are looking for a saddler who will agree you even if the advice it not the best for the horse.

I think the initial mistake was buying a saddle you liked rather than one that fitted the horse and you. The initial woman may not have watched you ride if she could see the tree not fitting.
Has the horse built up more topline? And shouldnt the saddle be made to fit and then adjusted if the horse builds up more topline?

Sadly, I think you should cut your losses and get a saddler out who will fit you and your horse properly. I don't live in the UK so am no help at all, but Saddle Company saddles and saddlers always seem to have excellent reviews and are not too pricey.

I am part exchanging the saddle on wednesday, hopefully I will find a saddle that fits before my show on monday! Or else we won't be going.
