Hi everyone, I'm new to Horse and Hound Forum but was hoping you could comment on my friend's horse in terms of her conformation. She is a Welsh Section D, 15 years old and competes medium level dressage. Apart from being in need of a diet, please feel free to critique as much as necessary! Thanks :D

She looks a kind sort, does need to lose some weight though. I'd imagine once slimmed down you will see a marked improvement with regards to her dressage as she will be able to move far more freely. Conf. wise her pasterns look a little short. She looks like she is naturally on the forehand, but I think that would improve with weight loss and schooling to engage her rear end. Enjoy her she looks a sweetie :)

She has a lovely front on her - a little short in the pastern and long in the back - however that is supposed to be good for a mare - allows room for foal.

I'm so pleased you say she is a little long in the back - I'm new to this conformation critique but had come to the same conclusion myself. For dressage in particular this may cause some problems with engaging the hindquarters; an act necessary for collected gaits. On the other hand, having a long back may be an advantage for flexibility and being able to perform lateral movements.

By the way, if anyone has a different opinion please share your thoughts. I am NOT an expert and appreciate all your feedback ;)
