I ride at 24 yo former dressage horse. He can be a little stiff takes lots of slow warming up and lateral work but once he is going he's OK but there are times when he makes his own life difficult. In his head he should still be doing 1 time changes and pirouettes and still tries to pull out party tricks (whether I ask for them or not!) so he trips himself up sometimes because he hasn't got the muscle to do it anymore. The back end can crash into the front like a baby I keep trying to persuade him long and low is the way forward but he's having none of it!

Shortens the stride length, which requires the horse to take more steps to cover ground, and thus causes a greater risk of injury to the front legs due to increased concussion on front limbs, possibly increases the chances of the development of DJD or navicular in hard-working animals.

Hes looking well for 17 and you have had no problems for what you want him to do and I take it is showing no signs of injury . I had a little 15hh horse that looked quite like flint conformation wise, he had upright shoulder very high withered, dipped back and generally not great conformation but did my job and did it well , he was never going to be a dressage horse but you work with what you have got and not alot can be done to change that .

He is a damn sight better put together than lots I have seen and probably my camel, too! He has a good pop, doesn't he (pics the other day) and you have a good bond and lots of fun with him. I don't think my lad will 'make old bones' so enjoy his soundness while you can, ignore the bad comments and don't get hung up on stuff you can't change. Says she, the Queen of Umbridge!
