Hi,
After reading the latest post about how much you would "pay" an owner to "share" their horse, I'm feeling a bit confused!

So.... just wondered.....

Why do some people pay to ride someone elses horse AND do all the work on their set days

but grooms get PAID to do it!!

hope this post makes sense! ;-) xx

Grooms are professional horse people. You are paying for a skilled service. Also, riding is not always part of the grooms job. A horse owner has to pay livery and hundreds of pounds a month for the up keep of their horse, and often does all the work themselves. Riding horses costs money whether you are an owner or a sharer or you just go to a riding school. If you go to a riding school you will pay far more money for the privilage of riding without having to do jobs to take care of the horse. When you share a horse you may or may not be required to do jobs. My sharers never have, but I think it depends on what you are charging and what each person wants from the deal.

I love horses and riding, wouldn't give it up for anything, but that doesn't mean I want to be a groom. I've been 'the assistance' on an assisted DIY yard, and schooled horses for payment, but it's simply not for me. I'd rather pay to ride on my own terms, do what horsecare I have time for, and stick with my exciting (to me) career. Horses are still an important part of my life but aren't my profession. I'm blathering on about myself but hope that gives you an idea x

I always think with a groom you don't build such a special bond with the horse - I share atm, and I like to think me and share horse have a brilliant bond (After 5 years!) :) I do jobs, ride, show etc and help out with jobs and exercise of other mare too (been v lucky)
Grooms get paid to do a professional service and the grooms I know do not want their own horse, but a career with them and sharers are generally people who want a horse but for one reason or another cannot have one of their own eg financial reasons, university, career etc.

SHaring is for those that simply can't or aren't experienced enough to have their own horse, you get the experience of having to care for a horse as well as having a bond with the animal. As already said when your paying to have your horse exercised the idea is it's going to be exercised by a professional.
