Just wondered if someone could clear up some confusion for me on the action of single-jointed bits. Having read Heather Hyde's Englightened Bitting and also spoken to her on the phone about this type of mouthpiece I seem to be getting contradictory information - on the one hand apparently demi-anky (curved single-jointed bit) mouthpieces work on the corners so have a head-raising effect; but on the other apparently as they have less parts they can be good for horses that don't want to take a contact ie. might actually encourage leaning..
So question is are they good for a horse that is on its forehand and leans or not?! As if they have a head-raising effect that would suggest yes, but if they encourage a horse to take more of a contact that would suggest no

Help!!

I think it depends on the bit and the thickness.
My mare will lean on a thick jointed snaffle but doesnt when in a thinner bit with the same mouth piece as the thinner bit is more severe.
I think it all depends on the horse and what its like in the mouth.

H used to be in a single joint and leaned constantly, no matter what size the mouth piece, but then he is a weirdo !!!

I have to change bits every 4 weeks to stop him leaning. He even leans on a waterford !!

My boy is very fussy with his mouth, he'll completely back off a double jointed mouthpiece but takes more contact in his neue schule demi anky, I'd prefer he leaned on it slightly than to back off it completely. And as Nat has said, I think it also depends on the thickness of the mouthpiece. I'm not sure I'd agree with the head raising effect?

What a single jointed has a head raising effect?? is this true or did i read wrong? if so im off to change bits!

lol well yes that's what Heather Hyde (Neue Schule person) told me! but as I say have read some very contradictory things hence the confusion!

when I put a single jointed bit in either of my 2 they go round like giraffes!

I think it depends on the horse, one mare I ride likes to lean on a singlejointed eggbutt, another horse will happily work into it, without leaning and my own horse will drop behind it, so that he is in an outline but not truley working into the bit. None of them raise their heads in it though. I have always though of single jointed eggbutts as being head lowering, but then a single jointed gag I would see as head raising, so it depends on the cheekpeices too!
