Confused - can this be correct?

Would really appreciate your learned opinions on how this works - mainly to satisfy my curiosity!

Q: My horse’s sire is a registered KWPN - however, the sire’s father is a (‘pure’) Selle Francais, and the sire’s mother is a (‘pure’) Holsteiner.

Shouldn’t my horse’s sire actually be a Holsteiner, and not a KWPN (because of the mother’s lineage)?

And if the answer is ‘not necessarily’, where does the KWPN part come in -

- Could it be to do with where the stallion was born?
- What studbook the breeder decided he should be part of, if he didn’t make it in/to the Holsteiner stallion tests, ie lower/different criteria for KWPN stallions?
- Selle Francais stallions might not be accepted in the Holsteiner stud book, ie the offspring from a Selle Fraincais stallion would be registered somewhere random/more lax about mixing?

Many thanks!

I should add that from what I can glean about the Selle Francais stallion (ie my horse’s grandfather), he was approved for both the Holsteiner and KWPN studbooks - so it sounds unlikely his offspring with a Holsteiner mare would be excluded from the former

Most warmblood studbooks are "open", meaning they can accept bloodlines from other approved studbooks as long as they meet the criteria and will most often have to be inspected before inclusion in the "new" studbook. If a stallion or mare is accepted in their own studbook, then they will be dual registered in both and any offspring may well be eligible in both also.

KWPN is a register of quality not of type. Any horse that meets their quality standards can be registered. I remember there was a pure Arab stallion who was KWPN graded at one point.

Thank you both! So interesting - I knew many WB studbooks were open (vs closed), but didn’t realise that might result in this sort of situation (I thought the offspring would automatically land in the dam’s studbook, as long as the stallion was approved for it). Also, had no idea KWPN has such loose criteria from a type perspective!
