I have the vet coming to my mare on Monday morning to shed some light on whats happening her near hind. She fractured the splint bone two years ago and had it removed at Leahurst, it had damaged the suspensary ligament as the splinter had gone walkabout.

She's been back in work and competition for 18 months now and all has been well, until now, its so long since I've seen a windgall I cant say wether it is that, but she has had some swelling at each side of the fetlock for a few days now, I've hosed it and applied Comfrey oil, which is what helped it heal so well when she first had the surgery there.

If I leave her in, her leg gets filled, if I walk her out it goes down and there's just these two puffy lumps, sometimes just one on the inside. I didn't call the vet straight away as I wondered if she had just tweaked something cahooning round in the paddock as she so often does.

She's not lame one bit, not even on a circle, and theres no heat in it, only when I've manipulated it for a while squishing it to see if it feels any different than earlier in the day.

I so hope I am just being paranoid, if it was any other leg I probably wouldn't be so worried, anyways, my vet knows all the fracture history, and she will give her opinion Monday, anyone elses neddie have windgalls, does this sound like one?

She could have a problem with her annular ligament which is the circular ligament which runs around the fetlock - this shows with lameness and windgalls - Your vet will be the best person to tell you though - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Thanks, it was almost completely gone tonight again, she's been wandering round the field all day. Still no sign of lameness in the slightest, oh well, we'll see on Monday, hopefully it will turn out to be something of nothing, I dont know why I haven't ever expected some kind of swelling to appear there, she is nearly eleven now and a cob type pony, I looked at my friends cobs legs and he has no tendon definition, his legs almost look like they are all filled compared to hers.

I've put her on Equine America glucosamine, just in case its an early sign of arthritis which Leahurst mentioned might arise later on. Ponies ..... who'd av em!

H's mum, you were right, she has strained the annular ligament slightly, she was 100% sound on the flexion tests though, which to be honest I was surprised at, as she is eleven and has had surgery on that leg! She can go back to normal work as long as there no change, but my vet said I should expect the windgall type swellings for a while. Wahoo, I'm so pleased it was nothing to do with the suspensary desmitis or the splint injury previous, I could have hugged my vet, actually, I think I may have done.lol.
