Does anyone know how the KK bits size up? I have noticed some models come in 'standard' sizes, ie, 5", 5.25", 5.5" etc but then others only come in 5.25", 5.75", 6.25".....

So, if my pony wears a 5.5" bit in general, would I opt for the 5.25" or the 5.75"? Do thry come up small or large? I was caught out before with a Myler which was huge, despite being her normal size.

The lady I usually ask has been on holiday for ages and her on line shop is closed - typical!!

Is the bit you usually use a loose ring or fixed cheek? If fixed cheek, get the size up in the KK, as its a loose ring. Otherwise, are you able to take one to try & return it if its no good? A lot of places do bit hire on sprengers. I have a KK ultra and an RS dynamic, and I've found them both to be pretty standard, size-wise. Not like the Myler, which as you say, comes up bigger.

She's currently in a loose ring. I have tried hiring from the Bit Bank, but not had a good experience on both occasions unfortunately. I had tried a Neue Schule Verbinend, then the RS Dynamic - but in the eggbutt which kept catching her. So I have decided on either the Ultra or the loose ring RS, but it seems you can only buy a 5.5" Ultra (in some places), or a 5.25 or 5.75 in the RS. Why can't they make it really simple for me!

If you can get the kk ultra in 5.5 and that's your horse's size then I'd try that, myself. It's tricky though, if you can't hire them - I can't either as the first thing my horse does is have a good chew on anything new! I'm steadily accumulating a collection of rather expensive bits. If you want to go with the RS dynamic, I'd take a look at your current bit and see whether your horse is a large 5.5 or a small one. If large, go for the size up, and vice versa. If in doubt I'd go for the size up, as you don't want her lips pinched. Although admittedly, I haven't had this problem with my kk, which is quite snug.

Have you tried Myler bits? I have found that even the most delicate mouthed neddy I've met (who hated even a lozenge loose ring snaffle) loved Mylers. You have to go down a size though.

She's in this one.

I haven't really tried the Myler range, we have a local rep but she is inundated so difficult to get hold of atm. The problem I have with my mare is that she has an incredibly thick neck, which she uses, along with a very broad, fleshy mouth & a thick tongue, so trying to get something to cater for all this and the fact she is opinionated, is proving difficult.

Her current 5.5 snaffle is a flush fit, so she may getaway with the 1.4" bigger - may have to try & find a more reputable source to hire from....although pony did try eating through the Neue Schule...not good!!

She might like this. If you could borrow one it would be worth trying. I do feel your pain, it took months to find the right bit for my mare and would have cost a fortune if I hadn't been able to borrow most of them.

Good luck.
