Hi,

Just had my wee foaly castrated (ok he's 17months but will always be my wee foaly) am waiting till he is all better before I can move my mare in with him but was given conflicting advice from 2 different vets with reference to his little tadpoles.

Vet 1 said he should be on his own for 1 month before company of the female variety can be introduced because of risk that he can cover mare

Vet 2 (who performed the op) said that relatively few tadpoles remain after they attack him with the scalpel and bolt cropper thingys and that he will only remain fertile for about 24 hrs, so theoretically mare can go in after that, but best to leave a few days for his knick nack sacks to heal.

And the Dr who performed the op on my human man last year told him to be careful for 12 whole weeks.

So, as you can guess, now really confuzzled. Any definitive answers from anyone who knows?

Need to keep him away from your mare for 6 weeks after the snip.
Not only can he still do the honors but he will still be full of testosterone which reduces over the weeks but gives him the urge and can cause fights within herds or other horses.
If you can section off a bit of your field for 6 weeks so at least he can go out and stretch his legs. Movement will reduce the swelling of the doo dahs!!!

I can't comment on the human variety.

human variety all working well and fully functioning :p well not fully if you get my drift :D:D:D

He is in a field on his own and has been since thursday, mare is curently at livery. Will keep her there until it's safe.

I knew about the testosterone, but the vet said that they actually can't impregnate mares because not much is stored, although I like you had heard otherwise. His doo dahs are very nice and non swollen now, silly sod only came galloping up to me across the field the next day (how the hell he could move I DON'T know!) I wouldn't have been surprised at him galloping away from me but towards me, now that's just stooooopid!
