Sorry for posting in here as well as veterinary but thought i would get more response faster. My Appaloosa x TB was seen by a vet for her eye yesterday, it was completely fine on sunday but yesterday morning was really sticky with yellow/cream discharge & lots of 'eye bogies' (excuse the term! No better way of describing it :D ) Managed to just about clean it once but took forever and she wouldn't let us anywhere near it again. Vet came and had a look, no foreign bodies present and thought it was just a regular case of conjunctivitis, probably aused by the wind blowing in her face as their field is right on a hill, catches the wind and they live out 24/7. Gave her oral antibiotics (trimediazine powders) and bute as an anti-inflammatory as there was no way i could get near the eye for drops, with instructions to give them 5 days to work and if they dont- then re-evaluate. Also advised to put fly mask on to keep wind out of eyes. Did that last night but have re-checked the eye tonight and it's really swollen on the lower lid and half closed. She still wont let me anywhere near it to do anything, she just rears and bounces around so i cant reach. Have txt my vet to see whether she thinks AB's need more time to work or whether she needs seeing again tomorrow. I know Appaloosas are particularly prone to eye problems so i'm reluctant to let this get any worse. Am i panicking over nothing, do the AB's need more time to work? Or am i right to be concerned?

Not sure if it is any help, but my mums cob had a really nasty eye back in the summer & I used optrex put it on some cotton wall & wipped it on twice a day & it worked wonders. It cleared up really quickly, a friend of mine her horse got a poorly eye & she had the vet, but what ever he gave her didn't work very well so when I told her to try optrex she was shocked of how well it worked & another lady on the yard I am at she always has optrex to hand for her horse. I am not saying that it will work for you, but I thought it was fab. Sorry not much help :)

I have thought about that (work in a pharmacy too so easy to buy!) but she wont let me anywhere near the side of the face that the bad eye is on at the moment, let alone the eye itself  Thats why she's had to have powders for now and see if they work, although i have a feeling they wont. Thanks for the suggestion though :)

Ohh i do love having a drama queen- vet phobic mare at times like these...

I had a horse which suffered from Uevitis, luckily he would let me put drops in. But i also gave him bute. He was diagnosed with conjunctivitis for 4 years until finally they said it's was Uevitis. You have to be very vigilent and as soon as it flares up treat straight away, because every flare up causes more damage to the eye. Hopefully your horse has conjunctivits good luck.

Thats what i'm worried about. Having worked in an equine hospital i've seen the effects of uveitis/ulcers etc... I think thats why i'm so paranoid about anything eye related now. My mom had uveitis too which the doctors didn't catch for a while. She lost her sight temporarily in the end, eye specialist said she was about a day away from losing it permanently had it not been treated. Lola's spooky enough at times, i really don't fancy her only having sight in one eye! My vet is also a good friend as well as my vet and i completely trust her and know everything is done gold standard so i'm sure i'm worrying too early but it's nice to hear other peoples experiences. I've had horses with conjunctivitis before but they're all been fine with eye drops so cleared up quickly. This one's a big drama queen though, the smallest of cuts and she's climbing the walls.

My cob seems to get conjunctivitis now and again and I always think its worse in dry windy weather. If it gets bad I clean normal saline and my good pharmacist will give me some chloramphenicol drops but for difficult (children) ointment is usually good as you can smear it around. Sorry not much help when horse wont let you near it.

I would say ointment for something difficult(even if you end up with it on gauze and wipe it across.

Hope you get it sorted(Strange that its swollen so bad though)? Usually its the eyeball that gets red....? A bit of puffy.
