My connie is currently unclipped and unrugged, he has grown quite a thick coat already. However I will soon be giving him a mini/bib clip, just want to take off under the neck, across bottom of shoulder and half under belly incorporating where girth goes as very hairy there and can get sweaty.

I was wondering what rug to put on him afterwards, he's out 24/7 and would like him to mainly stay out over the winter, only coming in when weather is particularly bad. Several people have suggested a lightweight will be fine but I've been looking on websites and they vary so much - anything from a rain sheet with no fill (which I already have) up to about 200g all are classed as lightweight.

Should I go for something about 150g and does anyone know of one at this weight? I like the Weatherbeeta Landa but is only 100g (not warm enough?) and their next one is 220g (too wam?). I see all these horses rugged up to the eyeballs but I have a slight phobia of my horse being too hot. God I hate this time of year and the daily rug decisions

Hmm its so difficult isnt it?! I have a connie and he was out unclipped, unrugged but gave him a blanket clip the other day as he was getting very sweaty when ridden... plus he's allergic to his own sweat...

He was wearing a lightweight rug... not sure what weight though sorry!

But the other day i checked him and he was a bit chilly so put on a light to medium sort of one with a hood cos his neck is completely clipped (sorry dont know weights have had the rugs for ages and dont
remember!!)

Checked him last night and he was just about right...

I'm the same I don't like them getting too warm especially due to sweat allergy!

Yours is having a smaller clip though so he won't need as thicker rug i think.. and my yard (leicestershire) is on a hill so quite windy... depends where you live...

Good luck!! haha

I gave the traditional in my sig the clip you describe (it's called an Irish

) and then turned him out naked

In fact, I took off most of the neck as that's where he sweats the most, cruel witch

He's fine at the moment, is still warm to touch all over, as the majority of him is covered with hair, including his back and loins. When it starts to get cold & wet on a regular basis I will put an unfilled rain sheet on him as he will be too hot in something with a lining because he still has his natural rug on

Personally, I would try turning out without a rug if you're only taking off that little bit of hair. As long as it's not sub zero, he's got enough food (be it grazing, hay or feed) and he's not sweaty when you turn him out, he'll live

I'll start using a middleweight once I've given him a trace clip.
