A woman came today to see merl- she say's she'll have him but hasnt left a deposit- but I am supposed to have someone view tomorrow-do I let them come- or do I consider him sold! I hate this horse selling business!

did you ask for a deposit?

Is she having him vetted? Has she booked it? Has she arrange when she's collecting him?

You could just ring the other viewers and say he has provisionally been sold, but no deposit left. If it falls through you'll get back to them.

I would let them keep coming until you have money in your hand, when I was trying to sell my mare I had two lots of people who asked me not to sell to anyone else as they wanted her. Didn't take a deposit, both times they let me down and I'd been turning people away.

I always say the first with the cash can have. You could ring the lady and say that you have other viewers and that you will allow them to unless she pays a deposit. She may have said she wants him but has gone away and thought about it and changed her mind, if she hasnt left a deposit she wouldnt even need to call, most probaly wouldnt bother to be honest, and if you turned away the others you may have no buyers.

Let the other people come and see as well, also make the person knows you are letting someone else come and try him if you can so you will soon see if she actually wants him.

I didnt ask for a deposit but I did say I had other people lined up to view hoping that would trigger a deposit from her. No she's not vetting him. She has asked us to deliver him- again I want some money before we do this as I might get there and she's changed her mind

The lady tomorrow sounds much more suitable for him anyway! But not sure what the etiquette in this situation is.

Did woman say when she was collecting? Unless it's tomorrow before the second viewer, I would ring the first person and ask them for a deposit.

she wanted us to deliver on the 16/17th- but I said it would depend if my OH is happy to do it as im too chicken to drive the lorry

you may well be right- I would hate to turn other suitable people away in case she changes her mind- I assumed everyone came armed with a deposit (subject to vetting)

Without a deposit I wouldnt turn away a second viewer... but I would have asked for a deposit to secure the sale anyway. at least then you wouldnt be out of pocket if the first lady does change her mind.

I was too stressed to push on for a deposit, she had 3 kids and a dog with her running around eveywhere all over the place and Im loathed to sell merl Im finding this really hard

I'd call back the buyer and request a deposit first otherwise tell her you cannot take the horse off the market. Before I go see a horse, I make sure I have at least 10% in cash available.

No money no horse...I don't expect people to be walking around with £100's of pounds in their back pocket in case they want to buy there and then but a token gesture, even if it was £50 or £100 would secure the horse.
I would contact the lady and tell her that you don't want to sound like your pressuring her but you have someone else coming to view and ask her to commit to the sale.
If she says no then you have another (more suitable) person want to come and see him and if she says yes then you can arrange a deposit.

However if you think that these people who are coming to view tomorrow sound more suitable then i would let them view (they might not turn up?!!?) and if they want him and you think they are right then ask for a deposit and contact this other lady and tell her you've changed your mind and no longer selling?!!?

You sell him to who you want, he's still your horse until he's sold.
