Well as some of you know I made the decision to have my beloved rottie pts before christmas.

Since then I have been offered
1. jack russell
2. bearded collie x pup
3. bloodhound
4. shitzu

I have turned them all down but......
I really miss not having a dog in the house. The cat running to the door to meet me is not the same as a dog - sorry puss.

The thing is I do want another dog but I don't know what I want.I know I don't want another rottie as I think I would always be comparing it to the last and we were blessed with her.

So what do I want ?
I like bigger dogs,something that want's to be with me - necessity as it will be coming to work with me , however it will need to be able to be home alone from time to time with out destroying the place.It will need to be trainable.Moderate amount of exercise. I like a good walk as much as the next person but sometimes I don't have an hour each end of the day for such a long one.Must be sociable and preferably something that is not going to mug the cat to often. Mind you she is quite capable of looking after herself - she used to attack the rottie !!

I think I will be looking for a pup but there are so many strays out there that need a new home.I am just worried about taking on an older dog.
I have been browsing the rescue centres and there are so many..........

Tell me why I shouldn't get a pup and why I should consider a slightly older dog
 
Because hopefully some other schmuck will have done the housetraining:D

Because they will hopefully have grown out of the 'eating your house out from under you' phase!

Because although it can be a bit trickier to get them into good habits, it is extremely rewarding when you manage it!

Oh, and you need a lab...;) Affectionate, sociable, gentle, loves exercise, loves to please you.

I will show OH and see what he thinks. I have to consider what he would like.Well I know what he would like to have - a malamute - but I don't think it would fit our lifestyle .
 
Because... everyone wants a cute puppy, they assume they will have no problems, it will be the perfect dog (of course!)

and then everyone walks past the "old" and "wicked" and "untrustworthy" sad faces at the rescues - end of the day they are only there because of a some humans actions! or lack of! and the good rescues put such a huge amount of effort into understanding their dogs. Childproof? tested, cat proof? tested, sociable with dogs? tested..

So, actually, you have an idea of what sort of dog you are looking for in terms of a type, so I would go to a good rescue (not sure where you live) and have a look for someone who you fall in love with. If you are down south, you can log onto rescueremedies.org and each dog has its own thread so you can track its progress with walkers/photos etc.

Or, I know you don't think you could look at another rottie, and I did feel similiar when I lost my staffie girl.. however, 6 months later when I rehomed another one, she was so massively different in terms of character it felt completely different so maybe don't say no to rotties - (there must be a rottie rescue).

Good luck with your new dog. You don't stop loving the one you have lost, you just open another piece for a new dog who needs you (OK super soppy but true!)

How about a nice retired greyhound (yes some do get on with cats, not all of them chase!) they don't mind not being walked all day long, or a lurcher?????

Go to your local rescue and tell them your requirements listed here. I'm sure they will have something to suit and it may not be a breed/type we would suggest on here. I'm sure you would fall in love with something in there and give it a fabulous life. It doesnt neccessarily need to be a golden oldie, there are plenty of younger dogs needing homes. I'm sure the right one is sat there waiting for you to come and pick him/her. :)

Jeez Zalacca you should put a warning on your post! Looking at their old faces, too old to stand a change next to the sleek loveliness of their younger counterparts, too slow to be as cute as puppies. God bless the oldies who have all no doubt been someone's friend during part of their advancing years.
Makes me want to cry, poor forgotten souls.
 
Check out GSD Rescue, although they are under P and can be bad at getting back, Many Tears or the chaps at BIG GSD or GSD Vigil, they are super friendly and have a list of dogs who would suit your arrangements x

i got my rescue from many tears. he was worth the 3hour drive each way. they have many lovely dogs and a lot of puppies from bitches who were dumped whilst pregnant.
