My horse constantly snorts in trot and canter (to a lesser extent in walk) when schooling. It's not seasonal, as has been ongoing during the winter. I originally thought it was a stress thing, but he does it on days he's feeling tense and on days he's feeling relaxed. It doesn't improve at the end of a session, some days he does it less and others more. He'll pull the reins out of my hands when doing it.

He does it very occasionally out hacking, when on a loose rein. But it's mainly when schooling.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Or have any ideas what the issue might be?

Thanks in advance

What’s the surface? And is the manège regularly watered / damped against dust and spores?

Hi there, it is like high blowing, in terms of what is sounds like, but its mainly in trot and not in a rhythm like your video above. It's like he's clearing himself, then he'll continue on for a bit and then snort again and sometimes, stretch out and pull the reins out of my hands.

Seasonal allergy maybe?

When your vet’s next out, ask him to watch the horse working. But it doesn’t sound like your horse is in distress?Used to be quite common to have ‘whistlers’, ‘roarers’ etc. treated, such as ‘hobdayed’, for making a noise. I’m not sure how necessary some of those ops. were tho, I’d be more worried if he was coughing.

Main candidates would be allergy or tension but if you aren’t convinced it’s that might be worth vet taking a look, something like a nasal polyp could account for it
