Quick question for any daily disposable lens wearers. If you'd only worn your lenses for a couple of hours (long enough to go for a ride) and would be wearing them again in a couple of days time, would it be OK do you think to keep them in a case in saline?

Wouldn't normally dream of this, but would like to make them last a little longer if possible, seems such a shame to chuck em out after only having work them for a couple of hours.

No personal experience, but OH used to do exactly this. In fact, he used to reuse the dailies for several days, all day wear. He said he found them ok - no different to the monthly ones. This was a few years ago though, so success might depend on brand etc.

Personally no. Purely because a close friend got an eye infection this way which has permanently damaged her sight in one eye. Prior to this I may have considered it. Been wearing lenses for 20 years now, gas permeable then monthly disposables and for the last few years dailys. The dailys are very different to handle and wear than the monthly ones so assume it is something to do with this that allows bacteria to grow more rapidly on the dailys. Really not worth the risk just to save a pound or two.

Not something I would do. I currently have daily disposable lenses having previously had monthly ones. I am now considering ditching the daily ones as have recently had one split in my eye and the other day one came out in several mushed up bits, not nice at all. IMO the quality of daily disposables is not as good and not sure how much handling they would take. What I do like about daily lenses is the fact I have a sterile pair each time I wear them, also when I travel I dont have to carry any fluids.

If it is a cost issue then why not try two weekly/monthly lenses which are normallyy cheaper anyway?

I would. Though would probably store them in cleaning and disinfecting all-in-one solution rather than saline.

Thanks everyone - it was just a thought. Nothing to do with cost, it just seemed a bit of a waste to chuck them out after only a couple of hours wear. The thought of eye infections scares me silly, so I'll not bother trying to save them for a second go - wouldn't have done it more than once with a pair anyway, but the risk is not worth taking.

I've done it in the past, yes. Just out of interest, how much does 90 days of disposable contacts cost you in UK?
Mine used to be €100 for 90 here in Ireland but I've been ordering them from a US site online for the last few years to save money. I must check whether I'm still saving money or not on that.

agree with this totally

Laser eye surgery - the only way to go. I had disposables for years and years. Had surgery, and now have had perfect 20/20 for 4 years. Sounds awful, in reality a walk in park and the results are fab.

I would love to have the laser done but I can never seem to have enough money set aside without something else blowing up, breaking down or needing to be replaced :D

I wouldn't tbh but they tend to get a bit uncomfortable after a good few hours anyway so I'm usually happy to bin them. I think I have previously saved them in saline when I had run out and they were ok to re-use once more, but wouldn't make a habit of it. Also had a friend who kept her weekly ones in for ages and she was told it's v bad and can damage your eye, so I'd always tend to be a bit cautious where these things are concerned.

Never seem to get round to sorting out laser eye, but prob cos I'm a bit squemish about the op !

I wouldn't. Only because my dad got a ulcer on his cornia from conteact lenses that hadn't been cleaned properly. He has lost most of the sight in the eye now.

He was in huge amounts of pain and couldn't cope with any light while it was healing. He couldn't work for about a month.

I personally wouldn't - but if you wanted to try then I agree with the poster who said disinfectant solution would be better than saline I would have thought...?

Laser correction would be wonderful, but a) I'm too squeamish about what might go wrong and b) as someone else said, there's always something else more urgent to spend the money on!

Laser eye surgery isn't an option when your eye sight is as bad as mine :(

Anything over -4 they don't recommend it and my eyes are -10 for my lenses, worse for

Maxie- just bought 30 pairs of disposables from specsavers for £22. I think there are cheaper ones.

OP- no. For the price of one pair of dailies, I'm not willing to risk my sight. It probably is OK, and I eat food past its sell-by all the time, but when it comes to eyes, I'm a bit more pernickety!

Mine were -11 and -11.5. Had laser about 8 years ago, have stayed at -1.5 and -1.75. Done with ultralase, wasn't cheap but as you probably know can't see anything with that level of shortsightedness and I fell off my horse out hacking and smashed my glasses and couldn't see to find horse! That scared me enough to get laser done!

Wow, I thought I was blind at -5.50. Just went for my exam this past Tuesday and am in again tomorrow. I got some new dailies to try. I had a bad allegery attack the other day and was scared I scratched my eye pretty badly. But all ok.

As others have said, not a great idea. I have done the same in a multi purpose solution. Had no issues and really you shouldn't. But I felt the same as you. What a waste. But it's really not worth the risk.

Slamina - very interesting. It was an eye surgeon who told me it wasn't an option with my prescription, he said the risk of the retina detaching was too high. He was not a fan of laser surgery though so probably a bit bias.

For the reason you state, I refuse to ride in glasses and always take spare lenses when hacking. People think I'm mad but they don't understand how terrifying it is to be so short sighted!

I've been wearing Acuvue daily disposables for years, they're not the cheapest, but I've never had any problems with splitting or disintegrating. I wouldn't store and re-use them. One of the advantages of dailies is that you're always putting brand new lenses from a sterile container into your eyes.

The eye surgeon is probably right but I imagine the laser company wanted the business, laser wasn't very popular at that time! Guess I got lucky with no complications :) I still wear glasses or contacts but at least they aren't bottle top ones lol and I can see ok without, just I like to see 20/20. Feel so much more confident since I had the surgery :D

I do save mine but ..... I use the stronger solution to clean them rather than the basic saline. I use the one that requires a catalyst in the case, can't remember what it's called? But it cleans them properly rather than just keeping them fresh as the saline tends to do. Ask your optician though to be sure. :)

I've just paid £166 for 3 months supply of daily True eye lenses and an eye test. I think i've probably overpaid, but I have eye problems (go to the eye hospital for yearly checks) so want to be able to visit my optician if i need to. OH has the same script so i can use his too!

I would never ever reuse my daily lenses. 20 years ago i had an infection from over wearing and it was agony and I couldnt see. I ended getting on the wrong bus because I couldnt see the destination. Ended up in the middle of god knows where.

I have just started using Night & Day monthly disposables. They are SO much more comfortable than my other monthly disposables. And you can sleep in them, brilliant! I haven't had the courage yet to sleep a whole night in them, but have had a couple of hours sleep and after a few blinks they were just like normal. Would really recommend them, got them from Tesco's opticians.
