Have you ever contacted past owners that are in your horses passport? I've just sent letters to the big lads first two owners as would like to know more of his history.

Also have you ever been contacted by new owners? Did you mind replying even if you'd sold that horse years ago xx

I speak to my boys owner pretty regularly, she gives me advice about driving him and about his foot thrush etc etc.

I suppose its a bit different in that she bred him so was his only owner before me and as i viewed him over 5 times and on one occasion we went out for a hack together so have struck up a friendship, but she insists she is happy to help if i need it, though i have to stress she has never once been pushy about seeing him, she is happy to help from afar :D

An old owner of my current horse contacted me and i was really pleased knowing his history (as he was sold on sales livery as she was abroad!) so i found out alote about him :)

But recently my yard owners horse's old owners contacted her and were really pushy about everything so wasent good!

The breeder of our horse managed to trace us following lots of detective work. She sold him to a girl who did not bond with him. These people complained he was hard to handle and threatened to have him shot.Luckily he ended up in a sales livery where we bought him,not really knowing much about his history.Nearly a year passed before we got a message from the breeder. She is so happy he is with us and doing well. She is still in touch and likes to know how he is doing with his showjumping competitions.

i contacted my horses original owner through her freezemark document as it had not been changed, she was very helpful and invited me to her yard to meet some of my horses relatives(this was 8 years ago). i sent her some up to date piccies last year and she was really pleased i still had her and she looked so well, so it has been a good experience for me..

I am wary of contacting my horse's old owners in case someone comes out of the woodwork and says "oi, I want my horse back" or something. :o I know that's ridiculous, I bought her fair and square and no-one can take her off me, but I am a worrier. :p I think it's from reading threads on here about loans going wrong, people selling on horses that weren't theirs in the first place and whatnot! HHO makes me paranoid...

I sold my then 2 year old filly to a HHO member over 2 years ago and we kept in touch via facebook.
She has now sold Kao on and I also have her current owner on facebook too.
It's been wonderful seeing her pics of her 1st being ridden and hearing updates.
She got 4th in her 1st ever dressage test and a clear round on her 1st time out jumping :D

Been on both sides, couldnt contact the owner on the passport but then found out it hadnt been updated so didnt have much hope anyway! Friend posted a video of him on youtube and someone who used to groom for his old owners saw it and put us in contact. Opened up a whole massive can of worms but thats another story!!

Also got an email from an old horse of mines new owner, nice to hear how hes doing and sent her a load of pics from when I had him etc. I am still in contact with newest owners from when I sold my last horse Toby to them :)

I've often thought of contacting my girls past owner as he bred her and i've since found out two younger siblings and that my missus is the eldest. Would love to know more about her pedigree and what her family has been up to as I remember when we went to see her he told us he was very much into in-hand showing and that he was selling her as she was too small...
In my research to date i have found out that between him and his relations they have wuite a few horses from her damline, so i guess they have something they like. I know nothing about the Irish show scene myself, so would love to learn more - i think my girl may have been shown as a foal/yearling so guess i'm curious as to how she got on...

Wonder how they'd feel about my taken her out of the country though...

We wrote to the 2 previous owners shown on our boys passport enclosing a picture and giving them an update. We enclosed all our contact details and hoped we would get a response. Both replied and his first owner who had bought him from the stud farm where he was bred phoned us and gave us lots of information. She also sent us a whole album of pictures including one of him as a foal. We send her regular updates, tag her in photos etc and it is lovely to be able to ask her questions about him. She in turn was delighted to know he was okay and that he has a home for life with us.:)

I sold my first pony to a girl about 10 years ago. For the first year or so we wrote letters to each other and she sent pictures of how he was doing. Then we lost touch.

About a year ago I found her on bebo and messaged her asking how he was doing - she replied and said they'd sold him to a lovely PC family and he was doing really well. Then she said she'd send me their details as I wanted to know how he was.

I never heard back from her, despite messaging her a couple of times on bebo and then finding her on facebook and messaging her on there twice.

I've decided to leave it now but it's a bit of a shame :( I just wanted to hear how he was and maybe see a photo or something.

I don't even know what breed my mares dam was?

She has an AES passport, elite breeding and was a successful jumper at 7. I do know who jumped her, maybe owned her, although there are only her breeders details in the passport? It seems that hey don't want to know me or her? :(

My lovely mare came to me after being shunted through 8 dealers yards in 6 months. She was in a sorry state and had masses of issues, which we've since overcome. She's the besthorse now, I love her to bits and at last she's very happy.

Whatever happened to her? God knows? I'll probably never know.

I do know they check out my FB page though, how weird??

Ooh, this is a bit funny because I just emailed my old mare's new owner yesterday, asking for an update. :p

Back when I had her, I managed to do some super-sleuthing to find her original breeders, which was no small feat given that she had no papers, only a small brand. I got those papers in the end, though!

I would love to be contacted by either the new owners of a horse of mine or old ones, always happy to chat about the horse we have in common!

I tracked down one of my horses that I'd sold years ago, through this forum.... found out that he'd died just a few months earlier.

He was clearly well loved in his last home but it was a sad and sorry tale in between myself and the last lady. I was gutted at the life he'd had after me and I vowed I'd never try to trace any others .....

Having said that, I still miss the 2 New Forest fillies I sold a few years ago and often wonder where they are and how they are :o(

i probably wouldn't contact someone about a horse i'd sold but i would be more than happy to hear from them :) some people don't like to have old owners 'interfering' which is why i wouldn't initiate contact but i'd be more than happy to send pics/info if someone wanted them
My first horse was bought out of racing so never bothered tracing his history- i don't know where he is now- hoping that he's in a good home. My grey horse's owners are friends with me on Fbook and its lovely to see pics of him and updates of how he is doing- they contacted me but i am glad they did :)

i bought both the grey and my current horse from the breeder direct so not much history for either of them....

micah is from Czech rep. despite this through the magic of the internet and his passport I managed to trace his old owners. Turns out they bred him too. I now have full history and photos going back to him as a foal

Last horse similar, although only from Wales What a fluke I put a post on the old IH asking if anyone knew a horse called Beacon from the area I bought him from. Amazingly someone replied. His unusual name and colouring helped identify him. The person was friends with the owner who bought him as a 6 month old foal. Gave me her number and I found out more than I wanted too  Turns out he used to buck her and everyone else right over his head!! Thankfully I had already had him 3/4 months and somehow solved his bucking problem by hanging on to a strap on my saddle.
