Hey All,
With this wonderous weather we are having Ive been looking into gettin reins with more grip - I dont like rubber reins as I find them too bulky. So went off to the saddlery and they recommended continental reins as they have less bulk in my hands and have stoppers to prevent my reins running out of my hands - does anyone else use them instead of rubber reins for jumping in the wet?

Cheers!

We used them as work reins and on very strong horses, they are fab in the wet and dont rub your hands as badly as rubber.
I had a pair with rubber sewn in which were awful though as i just had too much grip.

I personally hate them - find the stoppers are always in the wrong place,

Can now get some lovely rubber ones with (I believe) ballistic nylon running through the core rather than rubber coated leather which are beautifully flexible and not at all bulky

Ive also tried those Bio Reins - which yes are better than standard rubber reins and where the other option for me. thought id ask here to see what the general thought are on reins with added grip.

I didnt like the bio grip ones, they kind of collapsed in my hand.
I either go for continental ones, equiport do nice ones, or the Stubben ones with nylon running through them rather than leather.

I did feel that the bio ones where too soft in a way when i looked at them in the saddlery. so I opted for continental reins from albion - havent got them out the bag yet as want to make sure they are a good investment first!

I use the continental reins with rubber threaded through the "webbing" for XC, love them! I agree that I find normal rubber reins too bulky, the bio-grip ones are very expensive, so these are a good compromise, all the grip of the rubber but without the bulk.

whilst i do like continental reins i have the most amazing pair of rubber reins- they came with my john whitakker bridle- don't normally like JW tack but the reins are really nice

the rubber reins come in different widths, fwiw.
i like the continental reins but you have to remember to wear good gloves on anything that snatches the reins suddenly, because the stoppers really hurt if they get yanked hard against bare hands. i prefer them for dressage actually, so i can tell at a glance whether my reins are exactly the same length or not - my naughty right hand prefers a shorter rein to my left, so i have to keep checking.

Love my continental reins but I was given some Jeffries laced leather reins and with the right gloves these are surprisingly fab even in the Welsh rain.
