Another not too exciting update, one day I might go to a show so I have something interesting to say :)- a rather large abscess has burst through last night/this morning and he is much more comfortable although did start to wonder why he was sounder before it burst??
Anyway he is stood licking his foot like a dog and the farrier has had a look and is happy that it has completely emptied. It's come out his coronet so as you can imagine has left quite a big split. Farrier suggested just leaving it alone let it get some fresh air and heal its self.

Now my question.... This is the first abscess he has ever had while he's been with me and seems to perfectly coincide with the stretching of the white line. I know there is some debate as to whether stones in white line can track up and cause abscesses or not but would be quite a coincidence if not. What do you think? I have heard both sides of the story and to make a plan of action as to shoe or not I would like more info.

Thank you in advance :)

As you know, my mare has abscess trouble when her white line was stretched and doesn't now her white line is tighter. She was shod when the abscess problem started and taking her BF was a big part of sorting her hoof balance. I did alter her diet too and cutting as much sugar from her diet definitely tightened everything up.

So then the stretching of the white line can cause the abscesses then? I'm thinking I might get his feet trimmed this time and see how he is and if taking off the little flare he has grown tightens it up. He's fed almost everything I could to help. It's just the grass that seem to have affected him but there isn't actually that much I can do about that where he's stabled now. They have recently been turned on much longer storks we grass so that should help with the concentration of sugars not being so high

My mare never suffered with abcesses until the weather turned bad. It's often the wet weather. Since then my farrier suggested using surgical spirit on the soles of her feet when they get a little too wet in the bad weather. Just a little and only a few times a week (unless the weather is atrocious like it was in November). This has kept them at bay for a few years now. Did the job an absolute treat :)
