Well, if you remember a previous thread about my friend changing Lady's food without asking me first (took her off Alpha A Oil and put her in Hi Fi Lite) and hasnt been treating Ladys infected foot after i asked her to do it for me as i cant drive to get to the field everyday (she lied to me everyday saying shes been treating her foot, but when i got to the field a few weeks after, the peroxide bottles were still full) Please continue to read :)

After numerous rants to my mother about the fact i spent so much effort and hard work trying to build Lady back up and get her to gain weight, i didnt want her losing weight and my efforts to be wasted, My mum talk to my friend, T, and arranged for Lady to go back onto Alpha A Oil. I think she also changed her build up cubes to conditioning mix, but i forgot to check while i was there today. T then asked whether i wanted Lady to be on build up cubes or 16+. Now, from what ive heard, it makes horses Very Fizzy?? But seeing as im not riding Lady until her foot (Hopefully) Gets better, she can get as mental as she wants. (admittedly, i did ride her today for a few minutes to see how her foot was doing, it seems to be improving a little :) )

So, great wise folk, i need your help please :)
what would be better for Lady to help gain weight and keep it on over the winter?? She lost a little weight while on this Hi fi Lite. Should i put her on 16+ And see how she goes? Or D&H build up food? Or any other reccommendations which wont break the bank? :D

Thanks Guuyyssss xx

I really like Allen & Page feeds, ive used A&P Old faithfuls special blend with fab results, really kept the weight on my 19yr old tb last winter! Im also a fan of fibre beet, this is made by the same company that makes speedibeet and is fantastic for weight gain. Soaks to about 4 or 5 times its volume and would go well with the alfa a oil :)
Hope you find something to suit her soon!
x

Don't know about your feed store, but mine does own brand conditioning cubes and they are fab at their job, non-fizzy and cheap with it. Maybe see if wherever you get yours from does an own brand?

Yep, our feed store does their own brand, in fact i think that was what i put her on last winter through until it got changed. they were fab, i dont see why it had to be changed

Does 16+ help with weight gain?

Does she munch away happily or does she have to be enticed to eat up? Keep her teeth in good nick so she can plough through ad lib top quality fibre and top her up with bucket stuff and essential vitamins. Find something she really likes and has the conditioning elements and stick to it. Add tasty extras like carrot or apple and remember to feed something succulent every day in some form. Sugar beet is perfect for that, fibre-beet or alfa-beet even better.

16+ is not as fattening as Build Up. 16+ only contains 11 MJDE/kg (that is the horsey equivalent of calories) whereas Build Up contains 12.5 MJDE/kg. If you did switch to 16+ you would need to feed more of it than the Build Up to get the same weight gain effect.

does she need to gain weight or are you trying to stop her losing weight over winter? i personally use A+P old faithfuls and fast fibre with my old lad.

I don't know anything about build up cubes but we use 16+ for our 30yr old and she loves it, she doesn't struggle with weight though. We did try moving our very fit 17yr old onto it as she wasn't eating her hard food but it did send her loopy so we have put her onto ride and relax.

I have my own opinions on said-friend who changed things without consulting you....needless to say, they wouldn't be around my horse anymore!

Hope you get it sorted before winter....:D

She does need to gain some more weight (again) because she has lost some as a result of this food, i assume. But i would like her to keep a good weight on over the winter.

Ok, so ill have a look at the A+P, how much would you say it is per bag?

She happily munches through her food :) Her teeth have just been done a few weeks ago (So she has a better chance in gaining weight, then her feed got changed so went completely against my plans  )

I really like the combination of Build up Cubes and Alpha A Oil. That with a plentiful supply of hay (haylage would be more beneficial for your horse) and ensuring that she is warm enough should really help you keep the wait on her.

It's dissapointing to hear that she's lost some - and I can only suggest that your mum starts taking you see her at least once - if not twice - a day.

Sorry, but she's your responsibility not a friends - but perhaps your mother doesn't understand that??????

Me and my mum completely understand, but alot of people dont understand our situation :( My mum is disabled and cant drive, my brother is the only one in my family who has a liscence but he works all day until late. I am currently learning to drive but will be another month or two until i get my liscence, hopefully. I share a field with my friends and they drive past the field numerous times a day and feed twice a day, they do me a favour by seeing to Lady too. I rely on them to look after Lady while i cant get to her, i wish there was another way but there really isnt :( I honestly cannot trust these 'friends' so the sooner i can drive the better.

Why on earth did you not talk to your friend yourself?
Your 17 years old. Seems a bit childish to get your mum to talk to your friend.

If I had asked my mum when I was 17 years old she would have told me to sort my own problems out.

Plus, as has been said, your horse is your responsibility, not your friends.

Ref the feeding, phone up a D&H helpline, or similar for advice, they are very helpful.

edit - OK just read the above, ref how you cant get to field. fully understand.

Still think you should have spoken to your friend yourself, instead of getting your mum involved.

How about a big splodge of speedibeet on top of the build up cubes and alfa A oil?

That usually does the trick.

If you are looking for cubes for condition and not fizz, I can recommend Spillers slow release cubes. I used to use them for my old lad - they worked a treat- he was a real fizz-head too.

Glad to see you are preparing for winter already- well done you:)

My mum told me to stay out of it, she would sort it herself. And i KNOW she is my responsibilty, but my field is over half an hours drive from my house, not exactly walking distance, but my 'friends' are always saying things like 'oh we'll do this for Lady, we'll do that for Lady, we dont mind shes like our horse aswell, course ill do that for you we're there anyway' Then lie about it  :( :( :( :(

Thanks :) Ill look into that and see if we can swap it for our sugabeet :)

Just one last thing to add - now may be a good time to look to move Jadey nearer to you.

What livery yards are near by? These are often run with assistance available for DIY - which will mean that for a premium you can get the horse done by staff when you can't get there.

Yep, i have considered moving, ive looked into livery yards near by and found one about 10min drive from my house which is ideal, its about £35 a week DIY Which is good :) what would be ever better is if i didnt have to go to my stupid college and worked about monday-friday in my job then i could easily afford the livery with my mum only helping out when really needed :) Now to convince my mum..............

Would definatley agree with this. Have a scout round near you and see if you can move her somewhere more accessible to you.
Agree about the build up and alfa a oil. Another option instead of build up is Top Spec Cool Conditioning Cubes - high fibre, low cereal. So will do the conditioning job without the fizziness. Speedi beet or an unmolassed sugar beet will add that little bit extra.

Well - price it out.

Does this amount include hay and bedding? If yes - then you may well be quids in.

If not - then yes you are going to have a more expensive winter. But as I've said before (and I'm sorry I know I'm like a stuck record), your mare needs more support than she's getting. And this could be the ideal way to address this.

A 10 min drive is a good bike ride - but perfectly doable for a young 'un like you.

Ill find out :)
i agree with the bike ride thing, but Lady doesnt need stabling, well, saying 'doesnt need' i mean she CANT be, she panics in small spaces and tried to get out. She has plenty of rugs and is happy to live out, just canot stand to be inside.

Ill find out about the hay etc though :)
