Bit of an odd question I know but I was just wondering if anyone had heard or used some sort of contraceptive that can be used on horses, I have a fat good doer stally who I don't want on his own - he usually runs with a mare or 2 but I don't want any foals next year, and I have a equally fat good doer cob mare who is retired from breeding now at 19 so both need to be on the same sparse grazing over the summer so would be great if they could run together, preferably permanently, as both look at grass and get fat, and would keep stally happy!, so I was wondering if anyone knew of anything like a coil or implant for horses?!

My TB mare is permanently on Regumate, to stop her cycling because she can't be ridden in season... marbles in the womb are meant to have the same effect, though it depends on the mare.

i saw somewhere that the dartmoor hill ponies were going to be given some form of contraception, but i don't know if it is the male or female, and also would this stop stallion like agression even if it rendered a stallion temporarily infertile?

^^LOL!^^ I don't think my stally would be too happy with that idea - besides I need to send him away again, once I save up a bit more as it's not cheap!, to get more tadpoles frozen - his noodles might come in handy for that!!!:D
I'll ask my vet about marbles and Regumate - I don't know if it just suppresses symptoms of oestruss or actually stops the mare cycling? Crumbs if I gave something to my boy to surpress his hormones he'd be horizontal - he's so laid back already he'd go into super slow mode and not loose any flab at all!! I did see some sort of jab that they use on mustang mares which lasts a year, not sure if it would be obtainable here....hmmmm I'm going to have to do some digging around, it was just a long shot if anyone else has used something for this purpose other than gelding!!!:D ;) - he'll just have to put up with the deer as company for the mo and I'll have to get another grazing mask for the old fat mare!!:D

As the mare is retired from breeding, why not speak to your vet about ovary removal. She's not too old! It's a relatively simple procedure. The one I watched being done was on a 22yo gypsy cob mare and was done under standing sedation.
