I got back into riding earlier this year at my riding school and it’s been going well but I am aware of nerves at times. I know that it’s natural to be nervous at times but I feel that it affecting my riding as I tense up and hold my breath, this causes me to grip on so I am bouncing all over the place and for my hands to become very busy, especially in trot to canter transitions

I was wondering what advice people have for helping nerves.

Running in place for two minutes just before you get on is one way to release the tension.
Instructor putting horse on lunge line, while you ride the transitions a few times till you have the feel in your seat.
Those would be my two tension-tamer pieces of advice.

Great thank you! Never thought of the running before, I often go for a swim after I ride, maybe I should go beforehand instead as well!

Sing. You can't hold your breath if you are singing. Peoploe might look at you a bit funny - but it really works!

Don’t worry I’m sure my instructor looks at me funny all the time! I’ll try that as well, may take me mind off nerves in my head as well
