I know this isn't technically a competition question, but the more I can find out the better, and your opinions count too! We have a tennis court that measures roughly 20x40m and is no longer used, so are looking at converting it into an arena, has anyone ever done this? If so, how did you do it? I'm not entirely sure how tennis court drainage works, but it definitely has some kind of drainage system, and is only a few metres from a ditch to drain into. Would it be possible to just break up the existing tennis court surface and lay a membrane and then surface over the top? Also,on the basis that if we ever needed to remove it, we could just lift the membrane and surface off, would we still need planning permission?
Thanks!

We did it many years ago when there wasn't such a good choice of surfaces. The drains were fine to start with but gradually became silted up and less effective - it was at the bottom of a hill which didn't help!!!! We put the surface straight onto the tarmac which was good. It depends on the tennis court surface as to whether you would have to do anything to it, a layer of rough tarmac might work well. It was just under 20 x 40 but worked well.

Thanks, that's really helpful. What surface did you use? Did you not have any problems with it getting too deep or holes? I'm not sure what exactly the surface on the court is, it is like tarmac, but with a thin layer of grit on the top, however that may just be the tarmac disintegrating as it is quite old!

Sounds similar to ours. We started with woodchip which was good until it broke down and became too soft in places. Rather than re-new we changed it to ash which was cheap and the latest thing then. It was good and secure but that's when we started having trouble with the drains and it set to become rather firm so we topped it up with rubber. We probably should have had a sand/rubber mix to start with although the hill was the big problem with the drains.
