has anyone else on here got a horse with convex soles and has it ever caused problems? Is it something that ever goes away with good farriery or is it permanent?
Hi,
You need to get the feet x-rayed to see where the pedal bone is sitting, sometimes the sole drops if the pedal bone has started to change position. Remedial farriery can help this but it really does need a good farrier to sort it along with diet etc. Cal mag (make sure you don't over dose!!!), limestone flour, & seaweed is also very good with helping the feet.
I had the same problem with one of my dressage horses, luckily I have a fantastic farrier and it did help my husband being a Vet as we could x-ray each time my farrier did work on them so that we could see the changes going on inside. The other thing that does'nt help is wet weather!!! I know we cant get away from it but you could restrict turn out to only 2-3 hrs a day instead of all day to allow the feet to dry out. Hope this is of some help to you!
Our ID x TB mare had incredibly convex soles, caused by her previous owners having let her heels get very under run. This was pulling the whole of her foot forward and the sole was as flat as a pancake. Actually the owners didn't cause this personally, it was poor farriery, but as the owners they should have known something wasn't right.
We had her shoes taken off, she only had them on the fronts anyway. And since then with careful work on different surfaces and the use of pads and boots she now has lovely feet with good concavity.
