we tried to cook some linseed today for our pony but it doesnt seem to have worked :p we cant remember how to do it

we soaked it over night then tried to boil in a slow cooker but it failed to boil so we tried it on the hob but ended up standing there for hours waiting for it :p only some of the seeds have split and it hasn't gone very jelly like. we're planning on adding barley to it aswell next week.

does anyone use it/know how to cook the linseed?a step by step would be brill :D

ta very much

we used to feed it to racehorses- about 6ozs per animal, soak overnight in cold water, thentop up with water if some has been soaked up. boil on the day of use, preferably in an old boiler, boil for a few hours until jellified.be careful how you feed it as it is poisonous until boiled- my guess is you didn't boil in a big enough receptacle ?

As above but it sometimes takes longer then 3 hours! Some people boil it for 6 hours, but be very careful it doesn't dry out. Make sure it is cool before you feed it and it doesn't keep. So you have to make daily batches in a very large saucepan! I used to always use it but now I am lazy (and save pounds on electricity) by buying it ready made. Do you want it for the fattening effect or the showshine?

she'll only be getting it once a week as an extra fattening thing
what sort of size pan would you boil it it? we used a medium size one. it went a bit gloopy but not like jelly, as you said it should :)

We always used to feed it when I was a kid (back in the 1800's:D) but a word of warning: if it boils over on the cooker it is merry hell to get off....

my parents use to boil it when i was younger and i still can smell it.:eek:
they had a metal bucket linseed in the bottom fill with water and leave it on the aarger for the day upto 6 hrs sometimes to get it into a nice glupe type liquid, then put it into the 4pint milk bottles to store it
like others have said, dont let it boil dry, keep topping it up and dont let it come over the top:eek: and dont boil it if your having visitors,
the smell:rolleyes:
