Oh dear -really confused about what to do for the best-does anyone know of the wraps that you put into a bucket of cold water before you use them to get them cool - are they any good? - saw an event rider next to us using them once but didnt get to ask where to get them or if they are good. One of our horses has a real cracked heel problem so am very reluctant to use Ice Tight of Clay that has to be washed off! What about Kool Paks, the ones that you squeeze and then they become cold- would you leave them on for several hours? - Do they burn the skin? The ground is so hard now and its so early in the season I feel I really need to be using something!

so do i after they have had their cool boots on for twenty minutes first. i never use ice tight. and i did work for someone that used a sort of gel impregnated wrap that you put in teh fridge for an hour or two which were fantastic but never seen them since. i dont care for these liquids you soak crepe type bangages in.

we've started using witch hazel and arnica gel - stress free and easy to use

We use the cool boots you put in cold water, but we tend to get them wet and put a ice pack in them to make them colder. Then we use arnica and witch hazel gel. I can't remember the make of boots but they are quite old, still going strong though.

The boots are Aerborn sports boots.Very good but not cheap. Lots and lots of cold water does the job well...

But the boots are a good investment.

Sorry to sound dumb here!!!! but is the arnica and whitch hazel made up already or do you buy them seperately and mix if so how much of each??

I use this cool box kit, freeze them the night before & they stay cool till you need them. Good thing about them is that they return to body heart in 30mins which is what you want as otherwise you will chill the legs.
Can be used hot or cold & also pop magnets into them as well!
Cool box

The Witch Hazel and Arnica Gel is made I think by Battle, Hayward and whoever the other person is - its in a yellow and black tub.

We make up our own version of that for PN horses with a recipe given to me by an old groom of Nick Skeltons which i'm madly trying to remember its something liek equal quantities of vinegar, witch hazel and .........something (!) with arnica gel and lavender oil put in and shaken up. We have it in a sports cap water bottle and just squirt it down the legs.

The box K9H has shown about is relaly good have one of them that we use for the int/advanced horses and at 3DE's as well as these http://www.horseridermedics.co.uk/asp_pages/products.asp?id=28 which are absolutely brilliant and in someways better than the others, providing you have ice!

There are lots of pockets so you can stuff them full of ice and it stays on nice and easily.

Never leave ice on for more than 20mins tho, usually 20mins on, 20 - 30 mins off 20mins on etc

Cool Sport boots good as well providing you can get them really cold and again don't leave them on for too long as otherwise they start to warm up which doens't really help! An owner we worked with used quilted bandage wraps, used to keep them in iced water then just bandage over them for half an hour, don't keep cool for as long but worked just as well.

I dont event (dressage) but If my horses have worked hard/ in the summer I use aerborn cool boots, arnica and witch hazel gel. Cool Blue leg gel is really good as well.
