going xc schooling tommorow, and I think may well lead to sweaty horse. Whats the correct procedure for hsoing him off/cooling him down, and then travelling home
personally i would wash him down when you return to the box, and then walk him in hand until dry and calm ( depends on how sweaty and excitable he gets)
by the time youve untacked, washed down, cooled, re-dressed for travelling, packed up things, had some food, youre looking at 30mins (well it would take me that long-or longer
) and then he would be fine to travel
hope you have a good day
I tend to walk round till not puffing then hose off straight away and as peachesandcream says by the time i have fannied about about 40 mins have passed and horse is virtually dry and ready to go.
we recently went xc schooling. We dismounted loosened girths and walked in hand back to the trailer from the end of the course. Then whipped off boots and sponged legs with cold water, then took off saddle and waterbrushed the sweat marks off and popped on his cooler. Put tack and stuff away, had a fag, dished out the carrots offered a drink (once he was cool and breathing normal). Then put on travelling togs & loaded up. quite gobsmacked that we were at least 20mins later in leaving than the rest in our group. I didn't think we were faffing unnecesarily and I wouldn't have gone anyquicker. NB it was a nice warm day, with a gentle breeze and b wasn't too sweaty. I have seen me give a full on bath if dripping with sweat, before the cooler goes on. Also seen me finish and have to throw blankets on immediately overthe saddle as it's too chilly. depends on the whether and the state of your horse.
