I suppose one could hope that if they bite a treated horse that they then died. I remember years ago being recommended Stomoxin by a friend. She said she put it on her horse then watched the flies die. It certainly was good but no longer available, probably too toxic.

Yes you can buy pour on by mail order and in agricultural merchants. It's licenced for use in horses in other European countries. It's the same chemical much cheaper in Spotinor than in Spot On.

Patch test, it can raise a lump. Interestingly on my current horse it raised a lump the first time but not a bad one so I tried it a second time and now he's fine.

I find it excellent with flies around the eyes and nose and it's my impression that it lessens the bite of horse flies once they get a taste of it in the skin. Charlie had some pretty big reactions to fly bites before I put it on and now only ever gets a little lump.

ETA I've changed to using 3ml a week instead of 10ml every 3 weeks. I figured it was better for him to have the same level of chemical all the time, and guessing that the wider interval is to save farmers the trouble of organising the cattle to do them.

I used to use it when it was legal, was great stuff and worked for 24 hours. Not had a horse since.

Different stuff, SB. This is systemic, soaks right through their bodies, and lasts for about 4 weeks.

The old stuff was the only surface fly repellent that actually worked, imo. Shame it turned out not to be safe.

Spotinor. Much cheaper.
I've just given in and bought some of this, and taken on board your comments about dosage etc. I'm fed up of slathering creams and sprays on daily for it to not really do much, and retrieving removed fly masks! The fly rugs didn't last long either, shredded in a week!

First dose after patch test needs to be the full whack, then I top up weekly.

I have the zoertis spot on for cattle and sheep, is this the same stuff? So I can use this on the horses? Treat 10ml every 3-4 weeks and place on wither area?

Yes it's the same but you could buy Spotinor next time, it's cheaper at my ag merchants.

It does raise a lump for a day or so on some horses. I use it on the bum now because of that.

Thanks ycbm. I’ve got it for my sheep never realising there’s a cheaper version or that it can be used on the horses so it’s a win win all round!

So if we did this, it’s 5mg every 3 weeks for each pony? I can see it on Viovet for sale. Big plus for me would be it does lice as well. I can guess where they pick the lice up from given it’s field specific, but I need to use the field and I can’t do anything about the source of the infection given they aren’t mine. Have had to resort to nit combing them all daily when in that field, as with chemicals as soon as they’re clear they get reinfected again within a few days. Combing works to keep them at bay but it’s time consuming. This would be easier!

I’ve used Spotinor for two summers now on my equine mob. My observations are that the horse flies still worry the donkeys but don’t actually land on them.

It's mine that they land and begin to suck but detach before they are full., Before it started to work Charlie got some huge lumps from fly bites. Once it soaked in and spread through his system, he still gets bitten but the reactions are tiny lumps and few of them.

If spot on is put on the back or bum is it safe when the horses nuzzle each other? I’ve done a spot test and all gone ok but did wonder re nuzzling as my two are always at it!

I've no idea but it's designed to disperse throughout the body and I can't imagine that entering the gut through the mouth is a lot different than that. If you are really worried I would probably spray with fly spray on top to discourage licking.

People have tried to commit suicide with deltamethrin and its pretty difficult to do.

Just a small word of caution for those trying Spotinor. I used it last year but when I used it this year my old mare had a sensitivity to it. The only way I noticed was that I gave her a scratch where I’d applied it and she nearly fell over. There was no reaction evident other than that, but Im assuming she felt tender there. None of my others had a similar reaction, but she has been known to have a reaction to fly cream before.

Horse flies hunt by sight tho so only helps after they bite because tastes awful

What viscosity is spotinor? Is it easy to apply?

I've used Switch up to this year, but it seems that they have changed the formulation, and now its much thinner and runnier than before, which makes it difficult to apply. You are supposed to use 40 ml, divided into 4 x 10 aliquots on either side of the neck and the quarters. Despite applying it very carefully and massaging it in, it has left a real mess on my horse and has run off down to her knees and hocks. She hasn't reacted to it, and it does keep the flies off, but it is a PITA in use.

It’s a liquid but the dose for a cow is only 10ml on the wither so I use about that on the donkeys which are only wee and double that on the horse. Switch had no affect on my horse’s sweet itch whatsoever and Switch Pro was so runny following a change in formula I found it very difficult and wasteful to apply.

Is this the right stuff?
Yes, that’s it. Vet applied it to my friend’s six week old foal. The biting flies were really awful here during that humid thundery weather we had and the poor little thing was frantic.
