My horse has suffered from this for a number of years. He lives out all year round, his hay is soaked and all possible care is taken. Every year he gets worse. He is now 22 and can just walk from his field up to the place where he can get a shower when the weather is hot as lowering the temperature seems to help his breathing. I am lucky this year that the weather is rather cool with lots of rain but on the few warmer days he has to stop 2 or 3 times to cough up a sort of white froth. He has seen the vet many many tmles, Ventipulmin no longer seems to have any effect. He has had a cortisone injection recently which was supposed to help but I saw practically no change. His breathing is horrible and a teriffic effort is needed with his ribs going up and down BUT he is eating well and looks lovely, coat shiny and eye bright. I feel bad as do not know how much of this he can support. I am asthmatic and know how tiring it is when cannot breathe properly.

Has anyone got or had a horse in such a state and if so how are they coping ?

Thank you for any help

my horse is like this currently. He started flaring his nostrils breathing and double inspiration when he was moved to a yard near some rapeseed fields. Hes been on ventipulmin followed by inhalers but he really doesnt like the inhalers. Last vet came out and saw him tied up but not worked. Hes worse when hes been worked. Hes on no meds currently and Im seriously considering putting him on retirement livery. Ive had another horse with this and her breathing was very bad. She was lightly hacked out though. I know how disheartening it can be. I hope you manage to sort your horse out.

He can no longer work as he is like this for some months. How long can he live like this? I think if we had had a really hot Summer he would not have survived. I go every day to look after him and it is most depressing , I only wish I knew how he felt.

Thats how my horse is, but hes only had this for about 1 month. My mare had it also but she was quite happy running around in the field. My mare had it bad. My gelding is quite happy running around in the field but I dont exercise him. Apparently they can live years with it but it does get gradually worse. A lady on HHO has a horse with bad heave line and she does light work with her horse but only in walk.
