My horse suffered from COPD last winter and was put onto Ventapulmin for several weeks. This cleared things up beautifully but I am a little anxious regarding the same thing happening this winter. He is out all day but has to come in at night, but is in a well-ventilated stable. His hay is soaked. Any suggestions that could help him? (Also in Veterinary)

There is a Homeopathic practice that supply a supplement called Thymus. I know several people who have used this with great results. One of them had used ventapulmin but found that whenever she stopped using it, the problems came back, and it is SO expensive. Her horses problems cleared up completely. She had trouble after a flu jab incidentally. PM if you want details.

My horse has COPD and I have been successful in managing it by doing the following:

1. NEVER feed hay - use haylage. I'm surprised your vet didn't tell you this. It's one of the first things they told me.
2. Use rubber matting so that you can reduce the amount of bedding you use.
3. Never muck out when the horse is in the stable. Try and do it in the morning so that everything settles before they come back in.
4. I use Carl Hester Air Power - this supplement works well
5. Put Vaseline or Carl Hester Nasal rub before riding if you experience any head shaking.

Feel free to PM if you i can help further!
