Having been concerned for a while with regards to my horse loosing hair all over his body, mainly underneath him but also around his flanks and quarters, I was at a loss at what to do.

Hunting this season has been fun as usual but so wet, it has been difficult knowing what to do for the best to keep horses fit and sound. Wash him off, dont wash him off? Brush him, wisp him dry?

Should I stop him working? My horse did not like the areas being touched in particular so I started using the new Love the Skin he's In range from NAF, in particular the Wash. I used this to wash him with after hunting. Then towel dry him so he was not left wet.

The difference has been remarkable. The areas that have no hair are growing back and the skin has not broken at all. The skin is now strong rather than sore and he does not mind the areas being touched at all.

There are so many people I see who are hunting regularly with similar problems to my horses, many have had to miss out on some fantastic days because of skin related mud problems.

I really cannot believe the difference this has made and want to get people who are like I was to know about this! I really think that this has kept my horse hunting this season and hopefully for the remainder too!

Would be interested to hear about similar people with such problems?

My gelding lost hair under his belly, just had bold patched. Guessed it was from the mud where he'd galloped around his field and out hunting caking himself in mud! x I hose him off everytime after hunting to check him over for cuts/scratches etc but i dont when he comes in from the field everytime as its too cold. This has all grown back now but he has scabby bits on the front of his hind legs which i think is also from mud, i need to pick it all off really but it doesnt seem to bother him. Its different from mud fever!

Bring on the dry summer!! x

We hose legs and bellies when we get back. We in the past had problems at certains meets probably depending what had been on the land we crossed. Orange one seemed especially susceptable!. Remainder is washed in warm water and Hibiscrub. Doing this has prevented any problems...so far.

we've had this, and have found that washing off after hunting and using hibiscrub, then when dry applying a thick paste of pig oil and sulphur, and applying plain pig oil to belly and legs before hunting seems to have done the trick.

They look funny with yellow stuff on their legs and bellies during the week, but I'd rather that than the sore skin we had before. The worst thing is if you don't get the sulphur out of the girth area the girth stinks when you get home! so now we hibiscrub the belly and legs the night before hunting, and dry well before applying plain pig oil on a hunting morning.
