I am considering buying Moser Avalon Cordless clippers for my new horse who I was told wasn't the easiest to clip by her previous owner. I note from websites that they can be purchased with either 'ceramide' or 'steel' blades. Would anyone recommend these clippers (they seem good value for money) and what type of blade should I go for? I would be grateful for any independant assessment although the reviews I have read so far seem promising.

ceramide will only clip a clean horse, the grease will make them slippy. Also the clip is not very close like with steel blades. but on the very good plus side, they are very quick coolers, i have managed to clip a whole horse in about 30-40 min, and i would never go back to steel blades as these get hot quicker. other than the sound of clippers or some horses find them ticklish. most reasons for horses not to like clipping is because people don't notice that the baldes get hot ouch. Also as these clippers our cordless there is not limbo dancing with the extension cable. if you run out of charge and the horse is ok you can just plug into the charger and of you go.

I would definately recommend cordless, so much quicker as mentioned no cable to keep moving around. But I do prefer steel blades, but yes you need to let them cool more frequently. I'm not sure that ceramide ones would last long term against the coat.!
Good luck! xx

Ive got these and love them. My horse was unclippable but stands like an angel with these. I have both blades and got to say I prefer ther ceramide ones. The steel ones clipped that close he look a mess, perhaps its my clipping technique!! LOL. I bought mine from a company advertising on Ebay and you got a set of both blades. I think they are called Farmcare and they also have a website. Wahl will sharpen the cera blades for about £6 and are great to deal with (I had a problem at first)
If you decide to buy them, practise putting the blades on first as there is an art to it, otherwise they sound noisy. You will find a few posts on here from last year about this. Any probs, just ask. Quite a few people on here have them as I found out last year.
Good luck.

i am thinking of buying these if i can sell my mains clippers. i was told that once you have the ceramic blades shapened they lose their ceramic coating anyway and become just like normal steel blades - is there any truth in that?
also, are these clippers powerful enough to do a full clip on a hairy monster?

Thats exactly what happens. I got myself some last year and they were ideal. The only thing I would say is they are apparantly not great on coarser haired animals.

I have got them and I think they are brilliant. I originally bought them for clipping the feathers off my mare legs as she was a nightmare to clip and they are pretty quiet and being cordless was an advantage. I then got my gelding as well and i have given him a full body clip 4 or 5 times with them. They came with the Cera blades and haven't tried the steel ones yet.

I have the Liveryman Whisper Cordless Clippers. I use them on my hairies. They'll easily do a full clip and are great for legs and hogging too.

Have had my blades sharpened by wahl and they still have the 'blue' ceramic tinge but as they are so expensive to buy seperate, I suppose if people have found they end up like the steel blades then it may be worth getting the steel ones to start with.
When I bought mine Farmcare asked me if my boy was a very hairy cob as they had had one complaint by a lady who said they wouldnt go through its coat. He also added that he had sold loads with no complaints but he felt it only fair to mention it and that maybe the hairy cob wasnt totally clean or very greasy. Ive had no probs (ID x TB x Shire) but with the cera blades they do need to be clean as it does blunt the blades quicker..

Thanks a lot everyone for the informative responses. I feel much more confident now that these clippers will fit the bill.

Happy clipping!
