My boy went to the vets last week for scans on what I expected was a strained tendon. Turns out he has a large core lesion of his gastrocnemus tendon complicated by a small avulsion fracture (excuse any sp mistakes!)

He has had stem cells injected into the hole and is now on box rest with controlled exercise for the next 2 months.

Has anyone had to deal with one of these before? If so what was the outcome? Did the pony fully recover or was its use limited?

Thanks

My horse had scan in nov and had 50% tear of tendon ,high proximal is how vet described it if I remember properly. He had shock wave which finished last month and will have scan on 16th march.
I cant tell at this stage if he will make full recovery as he has other complications within coffin joint but if you pm me after vets been I will give you a update.

I have a little experience of this with one of my liveries. Can you tell me which stem cell implant you opted for, were they cultured, A-Stem or similar? Which tendon was it and what is the controlled exercise recommended?

They were a-cells and its his gastrocnemus tendon.

I have to build him up to 10 mins hand walking twice a day for the first 2 weeks, 20 mins twice a day for the next two weeks, then half an hour twice a day for the remainder of the 60 day period.
