My gelding keeps emptying a lot of his feed out of his bucket. Hes always been a greedy thing, opens his mouth wide, shoves his nose in and then of course, feed then falls out of his mouth as he has crammed too much in, but this usually falls back in his bucket.

but... this winter he has learnt something new. He does the usual, then as he has his nose in his feed, he flicks his nose sideways up the side of the bucket and scoops the feed out onto the floor! Wouldnt mind if he hoovered afterwards but he then wont eat it off the floor(wont eat hay off the floor either, fussy boy ;))!

Im thinking of buying him a corner manger, one of the stubbs plastic ones with the anti-waste bars but do they actually work?

Id rather get some recommendations before splashing out one a bracket and two buckets as they are a bit more money than a tubtrug!

Oh and his teeth have been checked six months ago by a qualified equine dentist, she took off quite large hooks (over two visits) and it has made a difference to the chewing and lumps he used to spit out, though he still likes to play with his feed the same as before, she did wonder if it has just developed into a habit due to him having such bad teeth when i got him.

My mare is a disgusting eater, food everywhere. The best thing I did was give her a corner manger and now she's much more settled at feed time and gets all her rations.

They do help a bit, it just depends how hard he is flicking it up; Bea does it, it annoys me greatly! She then spends time hoovering up what she's spilt that has landed in the small gap between manger and wall. I know someone who put another bar across the top corner, that seemed to work.

My boy always tips his feed over when fed on the floor and wastes A LOT! He would also knock the ones you hang on the door off too.

I have had a corner manger for about 2 years now and it is the only thing I have found that works!

If i fed the cob from a bucket he tipped it over, now i an feeding in a wide base shorter bowl he is a neater eater. The corner mangersa re good but do make sure you clean them out under the rim weekly as food gets stuck there and then grows and also becomes very unhealthy e.g. Mouldy. Try a wide rubber trug it will allow the horse to move the feed around instead of having to take a large chunk due to space.

I have a bucket that fits inside a tyre, prevents its from getting knocked over and shoved around, I now waste a lot less. All my horses prefer to eat from shallow buckets rather then tubtrugs weirdly

But your bucket that goes into the tyre has a wide based bottom not a narrow bottom like a bucket. I refer to a trug to give a picture of a wide based bottom, a big container, not a narrow bucket, i cant think of the proper name for those wide based buckets. Can you help me!!!

My old mare who is on a total hay replacement diet does both of those food wasting tricks, and she has to have at least one full tub trug twice a day. I found the answer is to split it between 3, she can get to the bottom more easily which is what she seems to be trying to do. Wider buckets, less depth to the food could be the answer?
