Well.... it's silly season again, and our usually quiet lanes are filled with drivers who are dangerous and no consideration of horse riders while on holiday (downside of living next to the beach). I've my much unused trailer who is raring to go and if there are any other Cornish riders on here who could give me some advice on where is easy to park up and ride/routes, either on Bodmin Moor, St Day Mine tracks etc, I'd be VERY grateful. I had more safer off road riding when I was a 'youngun' in the urban West Midlands!

Thanks, ;)

Yep, I've been searching that, BHS SW Access page is touch and go at the moment though. I can see the tracks on the map, but some local advice, particularly regarding parking would be great. :)

There's a perfect parking spot on the mines track (big car park) google the countryman inn in piece, drive past it up towards four lanes, there is a cross roads... Take a right and the car parc is on your right, also, you cab ride the national trust land around loe

Sodding phone! Loe bar helston area... It's one of my favourite rides... Easiest to park in the carpark in helston opposite the boating lake next to flora motors and then you can ride straight into the trust land :)

Why don't you load up, park at perran sands, and ride on Perranporth beach?

I live on the mineral tramway, loads of off-road riding, however it is swamped by cycling tourists!

Ha ha... Yes I remember the cyclists on the great flat load But it is a fun ride :) had my first ride on Ebs there, first fall... Cyclist!!, first canter... Last ride ever was on the national trust land... It's spectacular

I would off season! Too many dogs that are not used to horses on the sands for the next few weeks... My horses are good with dogs but have had their legs nipped before on our local beach and it's only a matter of time until a dog gets a wallop... as a dog lover, I'd hate for that to happen just because the owners have no idea... Thank you for your ideas though :)

I've done some endurance rides around the county, and they were great except for some one cantering up your back side and spooking your horse! Bike ride trails also no good this season. Just looking for some out of the way rides to take my mother in law on!

The penrose and low bar has cyclists and bikers and walkers, especially on the main estate but not in abundance and all are really respectful, once off the main estate and riding the fields and tracks to the bar there is no one around and plenty of space and opportunity for a good blast, there is also goonhilly or the area around stithians resivoir is also really nice

If you go on the Truro-Falmouth rd, come down the Carnon Downs by pass and turn left towards Devoran (by the garage) there is a car park on the left, you often see trailers parked there, you can then ride under the road straight onto the Devoran Tramway which takes you to Portreath

I don't know if it's any help but there is some quite good riding around the minions/cheesering/caradon hill area (used to hack out there from a stables a few years ago). I am pretty sure you could park a horse box in minions village, and you can ride almost straight up on to the moorland. The roads/lanes in that area always used to be fairly quiet too. There are several places you can have a canter/gallop and it has never been very busy in my experience.

I was going to recommend some endurance pleasure rides. Coming up are West Moor (Bodmin), Camelford, Brentor (Dartmoor). Worried to hear about riders charging up behind. From personal experience (am an advanced rider), I found the pleasure riders were actually more of a problem by cantering then walking so you catch them up then they go off under your nose for you to soon catch them up again when they were walking, rather than setting a regular pace. Next time I would suggest you put a big green ribbon in your horses tail to tell riders coming up behind to give you space & pass carefully as horse is a novice.

Remember if you encounter any bad manners (such as coming up fast from behind) to take the riders number & report them to the ride organiser. Discipline will vary from RO having a chat to rider about their behaviour to disqualification. Even if a rider is racing they are expected (& it is written in rules) to ask if they can pass, & do so considerately. Bad manners are not acceptable.

I've done a lovely ride on Bodmin Moor - I parked just off road with no problems - exit the A30 at the Blisland Junction (just where it starts being dual carriageway again), follow the road for less than a mile, then come to small cross roads, turn right and park up. Be careful not to continue too far on this road as it gets really narrow (if you miss the righthand turning I mean) - a horsebox will get stuck.

I believe you can also ride on Bodmin airfield - Cardinham, but you may need a forestry commission pass for this - can any other Cornish riders assist with this as I'd love to know too!

Yes....permit required.
Website states:
"With the exception of bridleways horse riders require a permit to ride in these woods. Please contact the District Office on 01392 832262 for an application form."
