Being a little bit new to breeding (ha ha very new). My mare has had her scan at 15 days. Her CL was still very large and the vet was unable to see much else going on. He is going to scan her again on monday. How common is it that pregnancy can't be confirmed at 15 days? Has anyone had much experience of this? I will just have to wait until Monday and hope that we can get a result, she will be 18 days then which seems quite a long time. I have spoken to another vet/stud manager who thinks that this probably indicates she may be in foal, fingers crossed! I have not had the mare long so I am not familiar with her cycle length.

Mmm - if an experienced vet can't 'find' a vesicle at 15 days then I'd say she's probably NOT in foal. But it depends if she was AI'd - and scanned the next day to ensure she had ovulated - or covered naturally. If covered naturally, she might have ovulated several days AFTER agreeing to the stallion's advances for the last time in which case she might only be 12-13 days - when a pregnancy might be more easily missed.

But mares cycles seem to be all over the place at present. I had 2 scanned n.i.f. last Friday - 14 days after AI. One came into season last Sunday, was covered Monday and was out again on Wednesday. The other showed no sign of coming in by Tuesday so was scanned again that day (what we call a WTF scan!) and had a 40 mm follicle and pattern 1 oedema suggesting she was coming in. We've tried her every day and she's tried to kill the stallion every day! So whether she's come in and gone out at lightening speed (seems unlikely) - OR she's got a persistent follicle - OR she's just being VERY slow coming on, who knows? She'll have another WTF scan on Monday if nothing has happened by then!
