Hi, i have been riding flying changes and walk to canter transitions, but i have never really known the true aids, as everyone tells me different.
my aids for flying change are:-
when going from right leg to left i, switch hip position so from right hip forward to left hip forward, left leg back to right leg back and open new inside rein and look in direction with inside hip bone holding more weight

and then my aids for walk to canter are:-
striking of left lead
collect up. Sit up squeeze inside hand, outside leg back inside leg on the girth and nudge into canter, squeezing just makes her run off my leg!

shes not 100%yet we've only done it a couple of times but what are your aids??

The aids I give for a change on Olympic are:
- Half Halt
- I put a leg back (if I want to go from right to left I put my right leg back, if I want to go from left to right I put m left leg back) as well as changing the bend.

For walk to canter:
- Collect the horse up
- Get the correct bend
- Give the normal aids for canter.

I'm with SuperKat, I don't do flying changes (well not deliberately) but for Walk to canter I just give normal canter aids from a nice collected walk, she's actually much better at walk to canter than trot to canter because she doesn't run into it, just strikes straight off

I agree with SK, that is how I have been "taught" (mostly self-taught from watching my instructors ride and from trying it out, although I have done both movements in lessons before too).
Having said that I have ridden a horse before who changes if you use too much inside leg. I have no idea if I am using my inside leg too far back for his liking and not sitting straight so he thinks I want to change, but it's really confusing!

left to right:
Firstly get a good quality controlled canter and sit tall. Get him really using his back end and achieve a steady rythum. Fix on a place where I want to change and as I approach it do a subtle half halt whilst pushing my right seat bone forward and put right leg on girth to maintain momentum. put left leg behind girth to ask hind leg to strike off. Be gentle with right rein to allow new lead leg to come forward. Yours sound about right to me! Walk to canter the same aids as usual, I usually get Flys attention first by asking him to soften and get a good active walk.
