My pony will not go onto the correct canter lead on the right rein, no matter what I do! I've been told to raise my inside hand a little, put weight on my inside stirrup, ask for canter on a smaller circle- makes no difference! Anyone got any other ideas?? :)

My naughty horse will do this to play up, the best way weve found to avoid this, look over your outside shoulder, open your inside rein, and keep your outside rein close to the pony's neck, outside leg back. Works every time

If she absolutely will not pick up the correct canter lead, not even on the lunge, I would be consulting the vet just in case. My mare had this problem and she was very very sore and had quite a problem with her leg which meant she had a year out of work! Always worth checking for pain if nothing else schooling whys works. Also a check of saddle, teeth, back etc would probably be of benefit :)

For the most stubborn of ponies, I find basically aiming at the wall, and asking for canter when you're really close to it (but still on an angle!) and persistence is the key. Close enough so that they HAVE to go on the right leg, or end up crashing into the arena fence.

Used to do this with my cob, worked brilliantly! Rode him so into the corner then at last minute asked and pulled out so he had to take the right lead - he started taking it properly after a few times!

try using raised poles, either one or two on a corner and trot in then land in canter pushing your weight to the inside as you land. this worked when teaching our 4 yr old the correct lead as she too just wouldnt pick up the right lead on the right rein!
