We entered Merlin in a local class the other week as a bit of fun - and now I find that it was a whole HEAP of fun and want to do more - in particular I know I could spruce up the way he and his rider look. He'll never beat the 'proper' horses, but he can give a good account of himself, and he was just SO good last time that I want to show him off some more.

SO - double bridle? (with flat cavesson noseband) is that right? or should he go in a snaffle (which would be a laugh because GO is what he would do, and STOP is something he wouldn't!)

And his rider (not me I hasten to add) - my 16 year old daughter would ride him. Should she have breeches? or can she ride in jods and joddy boots? What sort of jacket - black or a tweed?

Thanks for your help as ever.

Show hunter should be double bridle, you could use double in working hunter too, with martingale on bottom rein if you need it. Numnahs / girths should be brown. Daughter should have cream breeches / jods, long boots and a tweed jacket for both classes. Hope that helps (and please someone correct me if I'm wrong....)

^^ what they said, but I should imagine you would get away with smart gaiters and boots nowadays.

Also, I think, although don't quite remember, that martingale should go on snaffle rein, might be worth checking.

Also, isn't working hunter a bit funny in terms of horse leg wear? seem to remember that boots are ok, except overreach boots, which are not? has this changed does anyone know?

Boots are OK for the jumping section, but most be removed before the flat section of the working hunter class. martingale is OK for the workers, but not for show hunter classes.

Double is fine for both.

Long boots in adult classes (or gaiters) tweed jacket - any colour, although greens and browns are currently most popular for hunters, shirt and tie, gloves and spurs if you are being totally correct. No stocks or flowers in the lapel etc.

Plain flat cavesson noseband as you have already suggested.

that's all great - the fat boy doesn't use boots or martingales, so no problem there.
I will now get ebaying and start kitting the pair of them out. Will probably go for gaiters as the daughter has joddie boots and gaiters/chaps fit her better than long boots which always seem to be far too huge around the calf (she has skinny legs - hate her, hate her) Since shirt/tie is acceptable she could presumably wear a school shirt and we could buy an appropriate tie.

Fantastic - thanks chaps
